Once here, you will immediately notice the unique medieval half-timbered houses, which were carefully restored after historical challenges. Special attention should be paid to the buildings with poetic names: "House of the Star" (Haus zum Stern), "House of the Rose" (Haus zur Rose), and "House of the Sun" (Haus zur Sonne). Their exquisite details make this part of Germany truly photogenic.

This square is not just an open-air museum, but the living heart of the city, where a rich past and a dynamic present are harmoniously interwoven. Kohlmarkt attracts travelers with its authentic European atmosphere, making it a must-see on any tourist itinerary.

What to Do

At Kohlmarkt, life never stops for a moment. One of the most pleasant things to do here is to relax on the outdoor terraces of the numerous cafes and restaurants. It is an ideal place to order a cup of aromatic coffee and simply observe the leisurely pace of city life while admiring the ancient architecture.

For lovers of event tourism, the square is a real find. Depending on the season, you might stumble upon the vibrant Wine Market (Weinmarkt), large-scale cultural festivals, or the traditional Mummemarkt carnival. In winter, Kohlmarkt turns into a real fairy tale: an ice rink is set up on the square, where both adults and children enjoy skating.

Additionally, the square serves as an excellent starting point for walking tours. From here, it is convenient to begin a deep dive into the heritage of the historical center, gradually discovering hidden courtyards and neighboring attractions in the Altstadt.

Getting There

Kohlmarkt is located in the very heart of the Old Town and is an integral part of the main pedestrian zone, so you cannot drive directly to the building facades by car. The best way is to leave your car at one of the park-and-ride lots in the center and enjoy a stroll through the ancient streets.

For those who prefer public transport, it is most convenient to aim for the city's central tram and bus stops. From there, the walk to the square takes only a few minutes. If you are arriving by taxi, ask the driver to drop you off at the edge of the Altstadt pedestrian sector — Kohlmarkt is within walking distance of any point in the historical center.

Walking is the most pleasant way to reach your destination, as the square is well-marked on city signposts. Follow the signs pointing towards the Altstadt, and you will quickly find yourself at the center of the action.

History & Facts

The history of this place dates back to the early Middle Ages, and archaeological finds indicate that life was thriving here as early as the 9th century. Excavations have revealed remains of ancient settlements and ceramics from that period, as well as a unique burial site with 36 coffins made from solid tree trunks, inside which enamel cross-shaped jewelry was found.

The square got its name — Kohlmarkt (Coal Market) — from the coal merchants who occupied this space for centuries. Only hundreds of years later did the city authorities decide to move the noisy trade elsewhere, transforming the square into a more prestigious public space.

One of the main historical landmarks here is the Kohlmarktbrunnen (Kohlmarkt Fountain). Dating back to the 14th century, it served as the primary source of clean drinking water for the area's residents for hundreds of years. It is not just a decorative element, but an important monument to the city's past infrastructure.

Although the square has undergone significant restoration following historical challenges in the 20th century, today we can see one of the most impressive architectural ensembles in the city. The restoration of the facades has preserved the spirit of medieval Braunschweig for future generations.

Time Needed

For a quick look at the architecture of the square and a few souvenir photos, 30–60 minutes is usually enough. This time will allow you to examine the famous house facades and the historical fountain in the center.

However, if you want to truly feel the atmosphere of the place, we recommend setting aside 2–3 hours. This will allow you to slowly enjoy a coffee on one of the terraces, browse the local shops, or catch one of the many cultural events regularly held here.

Working Hours

As a public city square, Kohlmarkt is open to visitors 24/7. You can come here in the early morning to enjoy the silence and the first rays of sun on the facades, or late in the evening when the decorative lighting of the buildings is switched on.

Keep in mind that the shops, cafes, and restaurants located on the square operate on their own schedules. Most establishments open around 10:00 and welcome guests until late in the evening.
