The Sanctuary of Saint Mary of Our Lady of Grace (Santuario di Santa Maria delle Grazie) is one of the most famous and revered Catholic temple complexes, located in the town of San Giovanni Rotondo, in the Apulia region of southern Italy. The sanctuary is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, but its global fame is inextricably linked to the name of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, widely known as Padre Pio. It was here that one of the most revered Catholic saints of the 20th century spent most of his life, performed his ministry, and it is also his final resting place, which has become an object of deep veneration for believers.
The sanctuary complex includes several significant structures. Among them are the Old Church of Saint Mary of Our Lady of Grace, which preserves the atmosphere of years past, and a more modern, spacious basilica. The new basilica was built specifically to accommodate the vast number of pilgrims arriving in San Giovanni Rotondo for prayer and to venerate the relics associated with Padre Pio.
