Sengan-en (仙巌園), also known as Iso Garden (磯庭園), is a magnificent example of a traditional Japanese garden situated on the coast of Kagoshima Bay in the city of Kagoshima, Japan. Established in 1658, this historic garden belonged to the powerful Shimazu clan, who ruled the Satsuma province for several centuries. Sengan-en is more than just a garden; it is an entire estate comprising a residence, ponds, streams, shrines, and a bamboo grove.

The garden's main highlight is its use of the "borrowed scenery" (shakkai) technique, where the active Sakurajima volcano and Kagoshima Bay serve as a backdrop for the garden compositions, creating spectacular and dynamic views. A walk along its winding paths allows visitors to enjoy the harmony of nature and man-made art, while connecting with the history of one of Japan's most influential feudal clans.
The Sengan-en grounds also house the Shoko Shuseikan Museum, which features artifacts related to the 700-year history of the Shimazu clan and the modernization of Japan in the 19th century. A visit to Sengan-en offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of feudal Japan, admire exquisite landscape design, and learn more about the rich culture and history of the region.
