General Weather Overview

Chetumal is characterised by a hot tropical climate, typified by high temperatures and significant humidity throughout the year. The concept of a cold winter is practically non-existent here: even in January and December, the thermometer rarely drops below +20°C at night, while during the day the air warms up to a comfortable +27°C. This makes the city an attractive destination for those seeking warmth at any time of the year.

Weather conditions can be broadly divided into a drier period and a rainy season. The months from February to April are considered the sunniest and driest, which is ideal for long walks and beach holidays. Spring here flows smoothly into a hot summer, with May often becoming the sweltering month of the year, when daytime temperatures can exceed +32°C.

From June to October, the region experiences a distinct wet season. During this time, especially in September, the number of rainy days increases sharply, reaching its maximum. However, it is worth remembering that tropical downpours are often intense but short-lived, quickly giving way to sunshine. Despite frequent rainfall, the air temperature remains very stable and high, hovering around +28°C on average, so tourists are unlikely to need warm clothing.

Temperature

Chetumal welcomes travellers with a warm tropical climate that remains favourable throughout the year. There is practically no cold weather here, and the temperature chart is notable for its stability. The hottest period is the end of spring: in May, the average temperature reaches its annual peak of 29.1°C, and daytime figures often rise to 33°C. Summer is also characterised by high temperatures, averaging 28.5°C, which, combined with seasonal humidity, creates an atmosphere of true sultry tropics.

The winter season in this region of Mexico can be described as exceptionally mild and comfortable, making it the ideal time to visit. The "coolest" months are January and December, when the average temperature is around 24.5°C. Even at this time, the air warms up to a pleasant 27–28°C during the day, allowing you to enjoy beach holidays and excursions without the exhausting heat characteristic of the spring months.

Noticeable but comfortable temperature fluctuations occur throughout the day. The difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum is usually about 7–8 degrees. This means that even after a hot April or May day, when temperatures exceed 32°C, the nights bring relative freshness, cooling down to 24–25°C. In the winter period, night temperatures can drop to 20–21°C, ensuring a pleasant coolness for sleeping.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Chetumal is unevenly distributed throughout the year, allowing for distinct wet and dry seasons. The main rainy season begins in June and lasts until October. During this period, rain falls very frequently: the number of rainy days varies from 23 to 27 per month. The peak falls in September, which is the wettest month of the year with a record 27 days where precipitation may occur.

The most favourable time for those who want to avoid frequent rains is spring. March and April are considered the driest months: only 7–8 rainy days are recorded during this time, and rainfall levels are minimal (about 1 mm). This makes the spring period the best choice for long excursions and outdoor recreation.

In the winter months and in May, the weather is transitional. For example, in January and December, it rains moderately often — about 14–16 days a month. Since Chetumal is located in a tropical climate zone, precipitation here falls exclusively as rain; snow is not found in this region. Even in the rainy season, showers are often short-lived, quickly replaced by the sun.

What to Pack

Since it is warm in Chetumal all year round with an average temperature between +24°C and +29°C, the basis of your wardrobe should be light summer clothing. Give preference to natural breathable fabrics, such as cotton and linen, to feel comfortable on hot days, especially in April and May when the thermometer rises the highest. Be sure to take a wide-brimmed hat or cap, high-quality sunglasses, and cream with a high protection factor, as the sun is active here in any season.

If your trip is planned for the period from June to October, it is worth preparing for high humidity and frequent precipitation: the number of rainy days in these months is high. We recommend packing a compact umbrella or a light raincoat in your suitcase, which will protect you from sudden tropical downpours but won't take up much space. In the winter months (from December to February), when temperatures can drop to +20°C in the evenings, it wouldn't hurt to bring a light jumper, cardigan, or windbreaker for comfortable walks after sunset.

For exploring the city and its surroundings, choose the most comfortable footwear: light trainers for long walks and sandals for more relaxed leisure. Don't forget swimwear to enjoy the proximity to the water. Also, a useful addition to your luggage will be insect repellent, which will come in handy during nature excursions or evening gatherings outdoors.
