The Ben Youssef Madrasa is one of the most impressive landmarks in Marrakech, a former Koranic school located in the heart of the bustling medina. It is not just a historic building but a true architectural gem of Morocco and a symbol of Islamic education. As the largest madrasa in the country, it attracts visitors with its rich history and exquisite beauty.

The central element of the madrasa is a spacious inner courtyard, with a large rectangular pool for ritual ablutions in the middle. Surrounding the courtyard on two levels are 107 hujras – small rooms where students once lived. These cells are grouped around seven cozy inner courtyards connected by corridors, creating a sense of privacy and tranquility. Traditional galleries run along two sides of the main courtyard, separated by a solid wall, adding harmony to the architectural ensemble.
The architecture of the Ben Youssef Madrasa is a magnificent example of Moroccan-Andalusian art. Visitors are invariably fascinated by the intricate patterns of zellij tiles, skillful wood and stucco carvings, and the exquisite finish of every detail. This is a place where you can spend hours admiring the fine work of past masters and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of an ancient educational institution that for centuries was an important center of knowledge and spirituality.
