In this spacious square, you will find an amazing neighborhood of two denominations: the Roman Catholic St. George's Cathedral and the Serbian Orthodox Church stand opposite each other. In the center of the space rises an elegant Baroque Plague Column, a reminder of the city's complex history and its resilience in the face of trials.

Today, it is the main place for meetings and strolls. The bright facades of historical buildings, cozy terraces, and cobbled streets make Union Square a must-see on the itinerary of any traveler seeking aesthetic pleasure and deep historical background.

What to Do

There is something for everyone at Union Square. Start with an architectural walk: admire the details of the Scont Bank building facade, designed in a vibrant Art Nouveau style, and be sure to peek into the majestic cathedrals. Inside the Roman Catholic Cathedral, you can enjoy the silence and magnificent interior, and in the Serbian Orthodox Church, you can feel the continuity of Byzantine traditions.

If you appreciate art, don't miss the chance to visit the Museum of Fine Arts, which is comfortably housed in the former Governor's residence. After your cultural program, it's worth sitting at one of the many outdoor cafes. In summer, the square turns into one large terrace where you can spend hours watching the city bustle while sipping coffee or tasting local cuisine.

Throughout the year, cultural events are regularly held in the square: from Christmas markets to open-air concerts and art exhibitions. It’s the perfect place to feel the vibrant rhythm of the city and its welcoming atmosphere.

Getting There

Union Square is located in the very heart of the historical part of the city, so getting here is quite easy. For those already in the central districts, a walk is the best option: the city is designed so that the main pedestrian routes inevitably lead to this architectural ensemble.

If you are coming from the railway station, you can use taxis or public transport (trams and buses) that regularly run through the old town. The trip from the station will take no more than 10–15 minutes.

Tourists arriving at the international airport can reach Union Square by a dedicated bus or order a taxi via mobile apps. The travel time will be approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in the 18th century, shortly after Timișoara was liberated from Ottoman rule. The new authorities decided to turn the square into a symbol of the city's European character, focusing on Baroque architecture. During this period, the key spiritual landmarks were built: the Roman Catholic St. George's Cathedral, completed in 1774, and the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The Plague Column rising in the center of the square is of particular significance. This Baroque monument was erected in gratitude for the city's delivery from a devastating plague epidemic. The column serves as a reminder of the times when the square was not only a cultural center but also an important religious and administrative hub of the region.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the square's appearance continued to evolve. Elegant elements of Art Nouveau and Modernism were added to the strict Baroque forms, making the architectural ensemble even more eclectic and unique. The city's first theaters, banks, and schools opened here, turning the square into the heart of public life.

Time Needed

To simply cross the square and take a few beautiful photos, 20–30 minutes is enough. However, if you want to soak up the atmosphere of this place, we recommend setting aside 1.5 to 3 hours.

This will give you enough time to enter the cathedrals, visit the Museum of Fine Arts located here, and relax for a bit at one of the outdoor cafes. A leisurely stroll through the surrounding alleys will allow you to notice the details of the facades that often go unnoticed during a quick glance.

Working Hours

Union Square itself is an open urban space and is accessible 24/7. You can come here early in the morning to enjoy the peace, or late in the evening when the buildings are illuminated.

Please note: Museums, cathedrals, and restaurants located around the perimeter of the square have their own operating hours, which may change on public holidays.
