About

The Monument to the 1000th Anniversary of Bryansk is a majestic memorial ensemble crowning Pokrovskaya Hill, which is considered the highest and most historically significant point where Bryansk was founded. The monument is a true symbol of the continuity of generations, uniting the city's heroic past with its creative present. It is not just a sculptural composition but a sacred place for the citizens, embodying the greatness of the entire country represented by Russia.

The central element of the complex is a tall, three-sided stele faced with light limestone. Its peak is adorned with a bronze figure of the Motherland, which literally shines in the sun on clear days. At the base of the stele is a sculptural group depicting two legendary figures: the hero of the Battle of Kulikovo, the monk-warrior Alexander Peresvet, and the epic bard-storyteller Boyan, whose songs inspired warriors to great feats.

The area around the monument is complemented by authentic exhibits — cast-iron cannons produced at the famous Bryansk Arsenal. The entire ensemble is harmoniously integrated into the landscape, creating a unique atmosphere of tranquility and historical dignity, making it a must-visit for every tourist.

What to Do

When visiting this site, the first thing you should do is approach the very edge of the observation deck. From here, a breathtaking panoramic view of the Desna River and the modern districts of the city unfolds. This is an ideal location for photoshoots: the majestic sculptures of Peresvet and Boyan look truly monumental against the sky.

Be sure to pay attention to the details of the stele: it features figures symbolizing various milestones of history — from workers to warriors. History buffs will appreciate the opportunity to see the real cannons of the Bryansk Arsenal up close, which stand here as a reminder of the city's past industrial glory. The area around the monument is well-maintained, making it a pleasant place to just walk around and enjoy the silence and the special energy of this ancient site.

A visit to the monument can be perfectly combined with a visit to the neighboring Pokrovsky Cathedral — the oldest stone building in Bryansk. During the warmer months, cultural events and festivals are often held on the hill, making your walk even more rich and interesting.

Getting There

Reaching this iconic spot on the city map is quite easy. The monument is located at: Pokrovskiy Pereulok, 2. If you prefer public transport, you can take buses or minibuses (marshrutkas) to the "Pokrovskaya Gora" or "Svyataya Gora" stops. From the central part of the city, it is only a 10–15 minute walk.

For those who value comfort, taxis are always available — the ride from the center will be short and inexpensive. If you are traveling by private car, parking spaces are available at the foot of the hill. After leaving your car, you will enjoy a pleasant 5–10 minute walk up the well-maintained paths to the top.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to ancient times. Pokrovskaya Hill served as the heart of the city as early as the 11th century, when a wooden fortress was located here. For a long time, it was believed that Bryansk was founded in 1146, but archaeological excavations led to a revision of this date to 985 AD. Thanks to this discovery, the city was able to solemnly celebrate its millennium in 1985.

The memorial complex itself was conceived several years before the anniversary. In September 1980, a granite monolith was installed on the hill, signaling the future appearance of the monument. The project was realized by the outstanding sculptor Yu.G. Orekhov and architects A.V. Stepanov and V.A. Peterburzhtsev. The opening of the ensemble was an international event attended by delegations from Bulgaria and Poland.

The composition of the monument is filled with deep symbolism. The figures of Alexander Peresvet, the legendary Bryansk monk-warrior, and the singer Boyan embody the inseparable bond between valiance and the spiritual culture of the people. The stele, reaching upwards, unites different eras, serving as a reminder of the city's glorious journey over ten centuries.

Time Needed

To leisurely inspect the monument and take commemorative photos against the backdrop of the snow-white stele, you will need about 30–60 minutes. This time is quite sufficient to see the details of the sculptures of Peresvet and Boyan and enjoy the views from the height.

However, we recommend setting aside 1–2 hours to combine the tour of the monument with a walk across the entire territory of Pokrovskaya Hill. You can visit the ancient Pokrovsky Cathedral, examine the old cannons from the Bryansk Arsenal, and simply relax while admiring the panorama of the Desna River.

Working Hours

As the monument is an open-air memorial site, it is accessible for visiting 24/7 and daily. You have the opportunity to see it in the rays of the morning sun or under evening illumination, which lends the monument a special sense of grandeur.

Despite the free access, we recommend checking the official website of the city administration or the tourist center for information regarding possible temporary restrictions or holiday events. Visiting the monument is free of charge at any time of the year.
