How to get to Kigali

Modern and dynamic Kigali is not only the capital but also the geographical heart of Rwanda, nestled among picturesque hills and valleys. Known for its cleanliness and safety, this city attracts travelers from all over the world eager to experience the unique culture of East Africa. When planning how to get to Kigali, tourists can choose a quick flight to the international airport or an exciting drive from neighboring regions, enjoying views of the "Land of a Thousand Hills."

The country's main air gateway is Kigali International Airport (KGL), which serves over a million passengers annually. The airport is distinguished by its convenient location and well-established connections to the city center, making arrival as comfortable as possible.

For those planning complex itineraries across the region, airports in neighboring cities, such as Kisoro or Goma, can serve as alternatives; however, a direct flight to the Rwandan capital remains the most rational choice for most tourists.

Currently, there is no direct railway connection to the city of Kigali, and there are no standard train stations here. Travelers preferring ground transport should consider this feature when planning their logistics.

The nearest transport hubs are located in neighboring countries; for example, one can reach the cities of Kisoro or Goma, but the remaining journey to the Rwandan capital will still need to be completed by car or bus.

Despite the lack of precise data on specific routes in the current schedule, bus services remain a popular and budget-friendly way to reach Kigali from neighboring East African countries. Comfortable intercity buses regularly operate along major highways, connecting the capital with major regional centers.

Traveling by bus across Rwanda offers an opportunity to see stunning mountain landscapes; however, it is advisable to allocate extra time for the journey due to the terrain and potential stops at border crossings.

A trip by car allows you to enjoy the region's picturesque views at your own pace. One of the most popular routes runs from the city of Kisoro: the distance of 130 km can be covered in approximately 3 hours, admiring the green hills along the way.

Travelers also often choose the road from Goma, which takes about 3.5 hours (162 km). For a longer road trip, the route from Kihihi is suitable: drivers usually cover the 206 km distance in just over 5 hours.

Kigali is rightfully considered one of the cleanest and safest cities in Africa; however, knowing local customs will make your stay here even more comfortable and pleasant.

1. Plastic Ban. Polyethylene bags are strictly prohibited in Rwanda. They may be confiscated at customs, so pack your belongings in fabric bags or paper sacks.
2. Transport. The fastest way to move around the city is by motorcycle taxi (boda-boda). Always request a helmet from the driver (this is mandatory by law) and agree on the price in advance.
3. Dress Code. Locals dress modestly and neatly. For walks, it is better to choose light but modest clothing that covers the body, and a light jacket or sweater will be useful for the evening in the hilly terrain.
4. Finances. The official currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Cards are accepted in major hotels and supermarkets, but it is necessary to always carry cash for markets and taxis.
5. Cleanliness and Order. Do not throw trash on the streets and do not walk on lawns—fines are imposed for this. Citizens take great pride in the cleanliness of their streets.
6. Language. The main language is Kinyarwanda, but English and French are widely spoken in the tourism sector.
7. Safety. The city is safe even for evening walks, but as everywhere, it is worth keeping an eye on personal belongings in crowded places.
8. Umuganda. On the last Saturday of every month, a nationwide community work day (Umuganda) takes place. During this time (from 8:00 to 11:00), shops may be closed and transport may be stopped.
