One of the temple's most striking features is its unique roof. It is clad in multi-colored hexagonal ceramic tiles made at the famous Hungarian Zsolnay manufacture. This pattern, sparkling in the sun, gives the building a festive and unusual look, making it stand out among the classical buildings for which Serbia is famous.

Inside, the church is a spacious three-nave basilica with high vaults, richly decorated with stained glass and detailed carvings. The temple is not only an important religious center for the local Catholic community but also a symbol of the city's multicultural heritage, attracting tourists with its historical significance and flawless architectural execution.

What to Do

A visit to the Name of Mary Church should begin with an external inspection. Notice the Neo-Gothic facade details and the majestic golden cross crowning the spire. Be sure to walk around the building to see the famous colored tiles—they look different depending on the light, which is why photographers especially love catching the rays of the setting sun here.

Stepping inside, you will enter an atmosphere of peace and solemnity. The main points of interest here are the high pointed arches and colorful stained glass windows, through which light flows softly. In the interior, you can also see the burials of members of influential city families, which adds historical depth to the church. If you are lucky, you might hear the sounds of the organ or attend a Catholic service, allowing you to experience the city's living spiritual tradition.

After touring the interiors, it is pleasant to spend time in Freedom Square, which the cathedral's facade faces. It is a great place to relax in one of the outdoor cafes, where you can order a coffee and watch the city bustle against the backdrop of this majestic landmark. In the summer, concerts and festivals often take place in the square, organically complementing a visit to the historical center.

Getting There

The church occupies a central position in the city of Novi Sad at the address: Katolička porta, 21000. Located on the main Freedom Square (Trg Slobode), the church is easy to find—its tall spire serves as an excellent landmark from almost anywhere in the historical center.

If you are arriving by public transport, use buses (routes No. 3, No. 4, No. 7) that go to the "Trg Slobode" stop. From the central bus station or railway station, the walk takes no more than 10–15 minutes. For those who prefer comfort, a taxi ride from any part of the city to the edge of the pedestrian zone will take only 5–10 minutes.

The walk from the famous Petrovaradin Fortress to the cathedral takes about 20 minutes across the scenic Varadin Bridge and the Danube embankment. Please note that parking directly at the church is limited as it is a fully pedestrianized area, so it is better to leave your personal car at one of the nearby paid parking lots.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in the early 18th century when the first modest Catholic church appeared here. Following a significant influx of believers from Belgrade in 1739, there was a need for a more spacious building, which was completed by 1746. However, that structure did not survive to the present day—it was severely damaged during the turbulent events of 1848–1849, when fire almost completely destroyed the bell tower and the interiors.

In the late 19th century, city residents decided that restoring the old building was impractical and that Novi Sad deserved a more grand cathedral. The project for the new church was prepared pro bono in 1892 by the outstanding architect Georg Molnar. Construction began in 1893 and progressed rapidly: the solemn consecration of the fully completed three-nave basilica took place in October 1895.

An interesting turn in the history of the temple's appearance occurred in 1904. After another fire damaged the roof, it was decided to use bright Zsolnay ceramics from Hungary for the roof tiling. This decision not only strengthened the structure but also made the cathedral one of the most recognizable landmarks in the entire country of Serbia, thanks to the characteristic "diamond" glitter of its tiles.
