Štrand is more than just a place to swim; it is a true urban resort. The area is cleverly divided into a sandy zone and shaded lawns, where the canopies of hundreds of trees provide a retreat from the scorching sun. Every amenity for a comfortable stay is provided: from hundreds of rentable changing cabins to modern showers and sports facilities.

The place is particularly charming for its relaxed and warm atmosphere. During the peak season, there is a symbolic entrance fee, which helps maintain the area in pristine condition. In the summer, thousands of people visit daily, turning the riverbank into a vibrant kaleidoscope of cafes, children's smiles, and sporting excitement.

What to Do

There is something for everyone at Štrand. Fans of active recreation will appreciate the beach volleyball, basketball, and football courts. For those who prefer the water, the Danube offers refreshing coolness, while professional lifeguards on duty ensure a safe swim even when the current is strong.

It’s a real paradise for families with children: playgrounds, sandboxes, and slides are scattered throughout the area. One unique feature is the branch of the city library right on the beach, allowing you to spend time reading an interesting book in the shade of the trees.

The cultural life at Štrand is always buzzing: it regularly hosts festivals like the Štrand Summer Fest, sports tournaments, and folklore performances. In the evening, numerous cafes and bars fill with music, offering guests refreshing drinks and local cuisine. Outside the swimming season, the beach remains a wonderful spot for peaceful walks and outdoor picnics by the water.

Getting There

Getting to this scenic spot on the Danube is easy. Štrand Beach is located in the southern part of the city near the Liberty Bridge (Slobode Bridge). If you are staying in the city center, a pleasant walk or bike ride along the embankment will take only 10–15 minutes.

For those who prefer public transport, bus routes No. 6, 7, and 13 are ideal, as they run to the Liman district or directly to stops near the Liberty Bridge. After getting off the bus, it is just a short walk to the entrance.

If you are planning a visit from Belgrade, the most convenient option is the high-speed train or an intercity bus (the journey takes about an hour). Upon arrival at the Novi Sad station, you can take a taxi, which will reach the beach in 10–15 minutes. For those driving, there is a spacious parking lot, though it fills up very quickly on hot summer weekends.

History & Facts

The official history of the beach began in 1911, when it was formally established as a municipal recreation area. However, locals had favored this sandy stretch of the Danube long before that. The beach owes its name to the significant influence of the German community (Danube Swabians) living here in the early 20th century: in German, the word 'Strand' simply means "beach."

In the early decades of the beach's existence, strict social codes prevailed. A special bathing suit was required with the entry ticket, designed to meet the etiquette of the era: ladies were expected to cover most of their bodies, and appearing in overly revealing attire was unacceptable. Over time, Štrand became the most prestigious meeting spot for the city's elite.

Since 2008, the area has been accessible year-round rather than just during the summer months. Today, the city enterprise "Gradsko Zelenilo" maintains the grounds, replenishing the fine light sand annually to uphold its status as the region's premier river resort.

Interestingly, for many locals, renting a personal cabin on the beach is not just a convenience but a long-standing tradition and a status symbol. These small cabins are often passed down within groups of friends for years, turning into seasonal "clubs" for socializing.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the atmosphere of this place during the summer, we recommend setting aside 2 to 4 hours for your visit. This is enough time to swim in the cool Danube, grab a bite at one of the local cafes, and perhaps play a game of beach volleyball or tennis.

If you are planning a visit during the off-season for a quiet stroll along the shore, 1 hour should be sufficient. During this time, the beach turns into a peaceful park where you can admire the river landscapes and breathe the fresh air without the typical bustle of the peak swimming season.

Working Hours

Since 2008, Štrand Beach has been open to visitors year-round. The traditional swimming season, with lifeguards on duty and a paid entry system, starts in May and lasts until late September or early October, depending on the weather. During this time, the beach gates are usually open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

During the winter months and off-season, entry is free, making it a popular spot for daytime walks. As the exact start dates of the season and operating hours may vary, we recommend checking the official website of Novi Sad's city services before your visit.
