The cathedral building is designed in a striking Neo-Romanesque style with elements of Art Nouveau and brick Art Deco, giving it a unique and recognizable appearance. The red-brick facade, two tall towers, and an elegant dome over the crossing make it an outstanding example of Hungarian architecture from the first half of the 20th century.

Located on the spacious Cathedral Square, the church serves as a symbol of the city's rebirth after the devastating flood of the late 19th century. It combines the functions of a religious center and an important cultural site, attracting travelers with its history and solemn atmosphere.

History & Facts

The history of the Votive Church's construction is inextricably linked to a tragic date — March 12, 1879. On this day, a catastrophic flood on the Tisza River virtually wiped Szeged off the face of the earth, destroying about 90% of the city's buildings. The surviving residents made a solemn vow: if the city were rebuilt, they would construct a majestic temple in honor of the Virgin Mary.

The implementation of this large-scale project did not begin immediately. The first stone was laid only in 1913. The project was designed by the famous architect Frigyes Schulek, known for his work on the Fisherman's Bastion in Budapest. However, the global events of the early 20th century and subsequent economic difficulties halted the work for a long time.

It was only in 1930, more than half a century after the vow was made, that construction was completed, and the church was solemnly consecrated. The best craftsmen of the time participated in creating the unique ensemble of Cathedral Square, including architect Béla Rerrich, who designed the harmonious space surrounding the cathedral.

Today, this cathedral is not only a religious center but also an important monument to human faith and the will to rebuild. Its architecture combines Neo-Romanesque style and brick Art Deco, making it a unique example of 20th-century Hungarian architecture.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the cathedral's interior, admire the facade details, and stroll across Cathedral Square, tourists usually need 1 to 2 hours. This is quite enough for a basic introduction to the architecture and interiors.

If you plan to climb one of the towers to see the city panorama or attend an organ concert, we recommend setting aside about half a day for your visit. Cathedral Square often hosts festivals, so your stay may lengthen depending on the current cultural program.
