Playa del Cristo

About

If you are looking for the perfect spot for a relaxing holiday on the Costa del Sol, then Playa del Cristo is an excellent choice. This cozy cove, located in the western part of Estepona, is famous for its fine golden sand and exceptionally calm waters.

The main feature of this place is its shape. The beach is situated in a small lagoon, well-protected from eastern winds, stretching about 1,300 meters. Thanks to this, there are practically never any large waves, making your visit as safe and comfortable as possible.

Visitors often note that Spain hides a real gem for parents here: the water near the shore is very shallow, and you can walk up to 50 meters out before it gets deep. The cleanliness of the coastal area is maintained daily by municipal services, allowing guests to enjoy flawless views and crystal-clear water at any time of year.

What to Do

The main activity here is, of course, safe swimming. The bay's shallow waters allow for long dips, and the absence of waves turns the sea into something like a natural pool. For the comfort of holidaymakers, sunbed and umbrella rentals are available on the shore, and for those who want a bit more action, there are jet ski rentals.

Cozy beach bars — chiringuitos — are located right on the sand. Here, you can not only refresh yourself with drinks but also try traditional fresh seafood dishes while enjoying the sea breeze. The beach infrastructure is thought out to the smallest detail: there are clean toilets, changing cabins, and convenient stroller ramps, making the site accessible for all categories of tourists.

Don't forget to visit the neighboring marina to admire the white yachts, or head up to the Mirador de la Playa del Cristo viewpoint. It offers a breathtaking view of the entire bay and the vast Mediterranean Sea, providing an excellent backdrop for memorable photos.

Getting There

Playa del Cristo is ideally located in the western part of the city, just 1.8 kilometers from the city center. The exact address is Av. del Carmen, s/n. If you are staying in the city, you can reach the cove on foot during a pleasant stroll along the promenade past the marina.

For those who prefer driving, there is free parking right by the beach or in the surrounding streets. You can also always use a local taxi, which will get you there from the center in just a few minutes.

Travelers arriving from further away should head for Málaga Airport (Málaga-Costa del Sol), which is about 50 kilometers away. Buses and taxis run from there to the city; once in Estepona, you can easily find your way to the beach by following signs for the marina (Puerto Deportivo).

History & Facts

The beach is an integral part of the 23-kilometer coastline that Estepona is so proud of. This coast combines 15 different recreation areas, each with its own character, but this cozy cove is considered one of the most picturesque on the Costa del Sol.

The history of these lands is closely linked to the defense of Spain's shores from sea raiders. Right next to the marina, evidence of the past remains: the ruins of the 15th-century Castillo de San Luis and the Clock Tower (Torre del Reloj). These structures once served as outposts for monitoring the horizon and protecting against pirate raids.

The modern appearance of the beach surroundings began to change rapidly in 2012. City authorities launched a large-scale program to decorate building facades with artistic murals, turning ordinary residential blocks into an open-air gallery. Notably, the region has been inhabited since ancient times — nearby dolmens were found dating back around 5,000 years.

Time Needed

To simply get to know the beach and have a short swim, 1–2 hours is sufficient. However, if you plan to visit one of the beach bars or head up to the Mirador de la Playa del Cristo viewpoint for panoramic photos, you should set aside about 4 hours.

Families with small children can easily spend the entire day here. The calm waters and developed infrastructure create perfect conditions for a leisurely stay from morning until the sunset, which is incredibly beautiful in this part of the coast.

Working Hours

Like most municipal recreation areas in the region, Playa del Cristo is open to visitors year-round and at any time of day. However, it is worth noting that services and infrastructure operate on a seasonal schedule.

Basic amenities, including rental points and lifeguard services, are typically available during the high season — from June to September. If you need precise information regarding the operating hours of specific establishments or beach bars, it is recommended to check the city's official tourism portal or their social media pages.

Nearby

Beyond the sandy strip, plenty of interesting sights await. A walk through the surrounding area will allow you to discover the region's historical heritage and experience true Andalusian flavor.
