The mysterious Towers of Cartes (Torreones de Cartes) are a unique monument of medieval architecture located in the quiet and picturesque settlement near the town of Torrelavega. This majestic 15th-century defensive fortress, built from massive stone, once served as a reliable shield for the noble Manrique family in their confrontations with neighbors.
The hallmark of this site is the two rectangular towers connected by powerful walls with elegant Gothic arches. These arches form a passage directly over the old royal road, creating a unique architectural ensemble that transports travelers back to the era of knights and feudal disputes. Spain carefully preserves this heritage, which was recognized in 1985 as a historical-artistic monument.

Today, the "Towers of Cartes" are not just silent witnesses to history but also a living scientific space. Inside one of the towers is the Physics Museum (Torreón de la Física), where visitors, especially schoolchildren and students, can learn about the laws of nature through interactive experiments. This combination of rugged medieval fortification and modern science makes the site a must-visit for all guests of Cantabria.
