The climate in Kinmen, located in Taiwan, is characterised as subtropical with distinct dry features and clearly defined seasons. The city experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year: winters here are mild and very dry, while summers are hot, with frequent but extremely insignificant rainfall. The average annual temperature varies from approximately 14.5°C in January to 29.1°C in July, indicating a noticeable shift in temperature regimes.

Two main periods are clearly distinct in Kinmen. The dry season, spanning from October to February, begins with warm and very dry autumn months – October (average temperature 24.9°C, only 1 mm of precipitation) and November (21.0°C, 2 mm of precipitation). Gradually, the weather becomes cooler, transitioning into a mild and also very dry winter from December to February, when average temperatures hover around 14-16°C, and rainfall is minimal (1-2 mm). In contrast, the warm season lasts from May to September. Summer months, such as June and August, may count up to 20-21 days with precipitation, yet their total volume remains extremely low (for example, just 8 mm in June). This indicates that rains, although frequent, are generally very weak. The hottest months are July and August with an average temperature of about 29°C. The transitional spring months – March and April – are characterised by pleasant weather with a gradual rise in temperature and a slight increase in precipitation compared to winter.

The climate in Kinmen is characterised by noticeable seasonal temperature changes, offering diverse conditions for visitors throughout the year. The hottest month is usually July, when the average air temperature is 29.1°C, and maximum daytime values can reach 31.3°C. August follows with an average temperature of 28.7°C. In contrast, the coolest months are January, with an average temperature of 14.5°C and minimum nighttime readings around 11.5°C, and February, where the average temperature holds at 14.8°C. Thus, the annual temperature progression in Kinmen demonstrates a transition from warm, and at times hot weather, to mild coolness.

The summer period in Kinmen, covering the months from June to September, is distinguished by hot and rather humid weather. Daytime temperatures during this time are consistently high, often exceeding the 30°C mark (for example, in July and August, maximum temperatures are 31.3°C and 30.8°C respectively). Nights also remain very warm, with average minimum values around 25-26°C. Winter months, from December to February, bring mild and cool weather. Average daytime temperatures fluctuate in the 17-19°C range, and nighttime ones drop to 11-13°C, creating comfortable conditions for walks without exhausting heat. Frosts are not characteristic for this region.

Data analysis shows that diurnal temperature fluctuations in Kinmen are moderate. The difference between average maximum and minimum temperatures during the month usually ranges from 4°C to 6°C. The driest months in Kinmen are October and December, when only 1 mm of precipitation falls. In December, the minimum number of days with precipitation is also noted – on average 4 days. October is slightly rainier, with 5 days of precipitation. In these months, as well as in January, February, and November (where about 2 mm of precipitation falls and 6-8 rainy days are counted), rains are rare and likely bear the character of light and short-lived showers.

When planning a trip to Kinmen, it is important to consider its subtropical monsoon climate, which determines the choice of wardrobe. Throughout the year, you will need comfortable walking shoes, as the city invites pedestrian exploration. Sunscreen is also a mandatory attribute, even on cloudy days. From November to March, when the average temperature ranges from 14°C to 21°C, it is worth taking light jackets, sweaters, jeans, or thick trousers. Although rainfall in these months is low (1-3 mm), a light windbreaker or a compact umbrella may come in handy, especially in March when the number of rainy days increases.

From April to October, the weather in Kinmen becomes significantly warmer, and humidity rises. Average temperatures during this period vary from 21°C to 29°C. Especially hot and humid months are June, July, and August. For this time of year, light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics – T-shirts, shorts, sundresses – is ideal. May and June, as well as August, are characterised by the highest amount of precipitation (6-8 mm) and number of rainy days (17-21 days), so a reliable umbrella or a light raincoat will be extremely necessary. The principle of layering in clothing can be useful in transitional seasons (April-May and September-October), when the temperature can change during the day.

Do not forget about such small things as a hat for sun protection in the summer months, perhaps a light scarf for evening walks in the cooler time of the year, and, of course, an electronics adapter if necessary. Given the variable weather, especially in terms of precipitation, quick-drying clothing can prove very practical.
