Current Weather

Planning a trip to Putian? In this section, you will find up-to-date weather information and detailed forecasts to help you perfectly plan your visit to this coastal region of China.

Overview

Putian, located in Fujian Province on the southeastern coast of China, is characterized by a classic subtropical monsoon climate. The city features distinct seasonality: hot, humid summers are followed by cool, windy winters. The proximity of the East China Sea significantly influences the weather, tempering temperature fluctuations and ensuring high humidity throughout much of the year.

Summer months are often overcast and muggy, while winter brings clearer skies and dry air. Annual temperatures typically range from 8°C to 35°C, making the local climate relatively mild compared to the country's northern provinces. Autumn and spring are considered the most favorable times to visit, offering pleasant warmth and moderate rainfall.

A key feature of the region is the influence of monsoons, which bring the bulk of the rain during the warm season. Thanks to its coastal location, Putian avoids extreme frosts; however, high humidity combined with winter winds can create a chill that requires appropriate clothing.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Putian is notably mild, typical of the coastal subtropics. The hottest months are July and August, when average daily highs reach 31–32°C, and on some days, the mercury can rise to 35°C. High humidity during this period intensifies the heat, so it is best to plan walks for the morning or evening hours.

Winter in the city is cool but not freezing. In January and February, the average air temperature is around 12–13°C. At night, temperatures can drop to 8–10°C, while during the day, the air warms up to a pleasant 15–18°C. These conditions make Putian an attractive destination for those looking to trade harsh winter cold for the mild spring atmosphere of China.

Sea temperatures deserve special mention, as they remain comfortable for swimming throughout the summer and early autumn. In June, the water warms to 24–26°C, peaking at 28–30°C in July and August. In September, the sea still retains its warmth (around 26–28°C), allowing the beach season to extend until mid-autumn.

Precipitation

Precipitation patterns in Putian are closely tied to monsoon cycles. Most of the rain falls between May and October. June is traditionally the wettest month, with rainfall reaching up to 290 mm and as many as 21 rainy days. Heavy downpours are frequent during this period, and typhoons, typical for coastal China, are possible in the second half of summer.

In contrast, the winter months are notably dry. From December to February, rain is rare (only 4–8 days a month), and total precipitation is minimal, ranging from 27 to 70 mm. This time is ideal for sightseeing and walking, as the chance of getting wet is minimal. Snow almost never falls in the city due to the mild temperatures.

The shoulder seasons, spring and autumn, are characterized by moderate humidity. In March and April, rainfall begins to increase gradually, preparing nature for the summer bloom, while October and November usually delight travelers with predominantly clear and dry weather.

Packing Tips

For a trip to Putian during the summer (June to August), it is best to choose clothing made of light and natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. High humidity and heat make sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses essential. Don't forget swimwear for the China coast, as well as an umbrella or a high-quality raincoat, as heavy downpours are common during this time.

A winter wardrobe (December–February) should include warm sweaters, windproof jackets, and scarves. Although temperatures rarely drop below freezing, sea winds can be quite sharp. For the shoulder seasons, layering is the most effective approach: combining T-shirts with light jackets or cardigans will keep you comfortable during daytime temperature shifts.

Regardless of the season, your suitcase should include comfortable walking shoes. In summer, it is also recommended to bring insect repellent. If you plan to travel extensively along coastal routes, compact and maneuverable luggage is best.
