Current Weather

Check the current weather forecast and detailed climate data to ensure your trip to Shishi is as comfortable as possible. This section provides all the essential information about current conditions and upcoming weather changes in this region of China.

Overview

The city of Shishi, located in the coastal Fujian province, features a characteristic subtropical monsoon climate. Typical for this part of China is a combination of warmth and humidity, where seasons transition smoothly yet distinctly. Travelers can expect hot, sometimes sweltering summers and relatively mild but windy winters.

One of the region's key features is abundant rainfall, which occurs even during the driest months. The South China Sea breeze significantly influences the local atmosphere, bringing much-needed cooling during summer heatwaves while increasing overall humidity. The winter months usually offer plenty of clear and sunny days compared to the overcast summer period.

Temperature

Temperatures in Shishi vary significantly throughout the year, from a brisk 9°C on winter nights to a scorching 33°C at the height of summer. August is traditionally the hottest month, with daytime highs consistently staying above 30°C, while high humidity makes the air feel particularly heavy. Summer nights offer only slight relief, as temperatures rarely drop below 26°C.

The winter period, peaking in January, is characterized by cool and windy weather. Daytime temperatures usually hover around 14–17°C, though strong sea winds can make it feel colder. Shoulder seasons—spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November)—are considered the most comfortable for exploring, offering pleasant warmth in the 20–25°C range.

Beach lovers should aim for the period from May to October. During these months, the coastal waters warm up to an ideal 26–30°C. In winter, however, the sea cools down to 18–20°C, making swimming less appealing for most travelers.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Shishi is fairly evenly distributed, and travelers should be prepared for rain at any time of year. There is no strictly defined dry season, although the intensity of rainfall varies significantly depending on the season. The wettest period falls in June, July, and August, when the city is governed by monsoons that bring powerful tropical downpours and thunderstorms.

During the summer months, rainfall can reach an impressive 300–400 mm, and the frequency of rainy days exceeds 50%. During this period, the sky is often overcast, and sudden downpours can quickly give way to bright sunshine. This time requires flexibility from travelers when planning their itineraries.

Late autumn and winter (October–December) are considered relatively "dry" months, but even then, a noticeable amount of precipitation occurs. Winter rains usually take the form of persistent drizzle accompanied by sea winds. Snow is extremely rare for this part of China, so winter landscapes remain green, albeit wet.

Packing Tips

When packing for Shishi in the summer, opt for clothing made of natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. High humidity and heat make shorts, tank tops, and light dresses essential. Be sure to bring a reliable umbrella or a high-quality raincoat, along with high-SPF sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the intense subtropical sun.

For a winter trip (December–February), you will need a more substantial wardrobe. Despite the lack of freezing temperatures, the biting sea wind makes a warm jacket, sweater, and scarf necessary. Waterproof footwear is an excellent choice for walking during frequent winter rains. In the shoulder seasons, layering is the best approach: a combination of jeans, T-shirts, and light jackets will keep you comfortable as temperatures fluctuate throughout the day.

Don't forget to pack insect repellent (especially relevant in summer) and comfortable shoes for long walks. If you're planning a beach holiday between May and October, swimwear and a snorkeling mask will complete your travel kit for this coastal corner of China.
