General Weather Overview

Fuzhou is located in a humid subtropical climate zone, which ensures the city remains warm for most of the year with four distinct seasons. The weather here is generally favourable for travel; however, it is worth considering periods of high humidity and more frequent rainfall when planning your trip.

Winter in Fuzhou is mild, with an average January temperature of around 10.3°C and minimal precipitation. Spring brings gradual warming, and by March-April it becomes significantly warmer, though the number of rainy days also increases. Summer, especially from June to August, is hot and humid. Average temperatures during this period range from 26°C to nearly 29°C, while maximums can reach 32°C and above. June stands out with the highest number of rainy days (21 days on average), although the total rainfall in millimetres remains moderate.

Autumn (September-November) is considered a very comfortable season to visit Fuzhou. The heat subsides, humidity decreases, and the number of rainy days drops noticeably, while pleasant warmth remains. Overall, although the city does not suffer from extreme downpours according to total rainfall data, the period from May to September is characterised by frequent, albeit not always heavy, rains, which contributes to the region's lush greenery.

The hottest months are July and August, when the average air temperature reaches 28.9°C and 28.6°C respectively. During these months, daytime highs regularly rise above 32°C. The coolest period is winter, with the peak cold in January, when the average temperature is around 10.3°C, and night-time lows drop to an average of 6.9°C.

The summer season in Fuzhou, covering June, July, and August, is characterised by consistently high temperatures. In June, the average temperature holds at 26.1°C, with daytime highs around 29.1°C and night-time lows not falling below 23.2°C. July brings the peak heat: the average temperature rises to 28.9°C, daytime heat can reach 32.6°C, and nights remain very warm with temperatures around 25.2°C. August is only slightly cooler than July in terms of temperature, with an average of 28.6°C, maximums up to 32.1°C, and minimum night-time temperatures also around 25.2°C. Humidity in the summer months is high, which intensifies the sensation of heat despite the frequent, though not always heavy, rainfall.

Precipitation

In Fuzhou, precipitation is distributed unevenly throughout the year, with a distinct wet period occurring in late spring and summer, and a drier season in autumn and winter. The highest amount of precipitation, both in total volume (11 mm) and number of rainy days (21 days), is usually observed in June. Given the city's temperature regime, all precipitation falls predominantly as rain.

The rainy season in Fuzhou is most active from May to August. In June, the wettest month, an average of 11 mm of precipitation falls, and it rains for approximately 21 days. May is also notable for increased humidity: 8 mm of precipitation and 18 rainy days. In July and August, rainfall amounts to about 7 mm for each month, with 16 and 20 rainy days respectively. The nature of precipitation during this period is typically frequent but mostly light rain or drizzle.

January is also characterised by a small amount of precipitation (2 mm) and a low number of rainy days (8 days). October (2 mm, 10 rainy days) and November (3 mm, 10 rainy days) are transitional months leading into the drier season, when the frequency and intensity of rains decrease noticeably.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Fuzhou, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly to feel comfortable in any weather. The climate here is humid subtropical with distinct seasons, so the principle of layering will be your best ally. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable footwear for long walks is a must. Given that even in months with lower total rainfall there are many rainy days (especially from May to August), a compact umbrella or a light raincoat will become indispensable companions.

In summer (from June to August), Fuzhou is hot and humid, with average temperatures holding above 25°C and maximums potentially exceeding 32°C. Pack your suitcase with the heat in mind: light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics (cotton, linen), shorts, and T-shirts. Do not forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the most pleasant seasons. It is warm during the day, but evenings can be cool, so light jackets, cardigans, or jumpers will come in handy. In May and September, there are still quite a few rainy days, so an umbrella will not go amiss.

Winter in Fuzhou (December-February) is mild, with the average temperature hovering around 10-11°C. There are no severe frosts, but for comfortable walks you will need warm clothes: a jumper, a fleece jacket, a mid-season jacket, and perhaps a scarf and hat, especially for the evening hours or if you are sensitive to the cold. Although there is little precipitation in winter, a few rainy days do occur, so waterproof outerwear or an umbrella may prove useful.
