About

The main cultural stage of Cherkasy is the majestic "Druzhba Narodiv" (Friendship of Peoples) Palace of Culture. This monumental building, located in the heart of the city on Shevchenko Boulevard, is considered one of the region's primary architectural symbols. Ukraine is home to many such art centers, but this venue stands out for its scale and modern facilities.

The Palace is a multifunctional space under the patronage of the chemical giant "Azot." Inside, there are two halls: a spacious 1,000-seat concert hall and a more intimate lecture hall. It is not just a venue for touring stars, but also a true home for dozens of creative groups, from dance ensembles to vocal studios.

The landscaped area in front of the entrance is particularly eye-catching. Here you will find a square with a dynamic light fountain, which becomes a popular meeting spot for locals and tourists in the evening. The building's modern architecture, combined with high-quality infrastructure, makes "Druzhba Narodiv" a must-see on any city tour.

History & Facts

The "Druzhba Narodiv" (Friendship of Peoples) Palace of Culture opened its doors in 1980. It was designed by a group of talented architects — L. Konradsky, M. Sobchuk, and S. Fursenko. Since its opening, the building has become more than just an architectural landmark; it is a vital leisure center, originally built as part of the social infrastructure for the Azot chemical plant.

An interesting chapter in the palace's history began in 2011 with a major renovation project under the enterprise's social program. Approximately 50 million hryvnias were invested in upgrading the complex. The work covered everything from capital roof repairs and window replacements to installing specialized dance flooring in rehearsal halls and completely replacing the seats in the main auditorium.

The grand reopening took place on September 8, 2012, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Cherkasy's "Azot." Today, the palace is the most modern and technically equipped concert venue in the region, while retaining its recognizable Soviet Modernist aesthetic.

Time Needed

If you simply want to admire the architecture and relax by the fountain in the square, 30–40 minutes will be sufficient. It is a great spot for a short break while walking through the city center.

If your goal is to attend a specific event, concert, or exhibition, you should set aside about 2–3 hours. This will allow you to enjoy the atmosphere without rushing, visit the local cafe, and fully immerse yourself in the cultural program.
