Poltava Local Lore Museum

About

The majestic building housing the Vasyl Krychevsky Poltava Local Lore Museum is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful architectural landmarks that Ukraine is proud of. Built in the early 20th century in the Ukrainian Art Nouveau style, this museum complex impresses with its ornate facade, decorated with ceramics and the coats of arms of ancient cities.

Interestingly, the building was originally created for the provincial zemstvo (local administration), and today it is a true landmark visited by every guest coming to the city of Poltava. The museum's exterior is a symphony of national ornaments and elegant forms that are harmoniously integrated into the urban landscape.

Inside the museum lies one of the richest collections in the country. Founded in 1891 by the prominent scientist Vasyl Dokuchaev, the museum evolved from a small natural science office into a large-scale repository of the region's history, culture, and nature. It is a place where the architectural masterpiece on the outside is complemented by priceless treasures within.

What to Do

Once inside, be sure to pay attention to the decoration of the central hall and the grand staircase—the interiors here are no less impressive than the facade. The museum features several thematic departments: nature, archaeology, ethnography, and history from different periods. Each exhibition allows you to take a journey through time, from prehistoric eras to the present day.

Of particular interest to visitors is the hall called "The Treasury". It houses rare exhibits ranging from Ancient Egyptian artifacts to antique items and Cossack relics. The total number of storage units exceeds 190,000, including a unique numismatic collection, ancient ceramics, and masterfully crafted Poltava carpets and embroideries.

For nature lovers, the museum has prepared an extensive herbarium and soil collections gathered by the first researchers of the region. Walking through the ethnography halls, you can study traditional life in detail: view authentic plakhtas, rushnyks, and household items created by local craftsmen over centuries. It is also worth visiting the office dedicated to famous natives of the Poltava land.

Getting There

Finding this architectural treasure is easy, as it is located in the very heart of the historical center. The official address of the museum is 2 Konstytutsii Street. Thanks to its central location, the building serves as a landmark for many tourist routes.

The museum is easily accessible by public transport. Most buses and shuttle taxis passing through the city center stop within a few minutes' walk of the main entrance. If you prefer comfort, a taxi ride from the central squares or the railway station will take only 5–10 minutes.

Walking is another great option. The museum building stands out strikingly against the surrounding architecture due to its unusual facade. Interestingly, due to the landscape features, the building appears two stories high from the main entrance, while from the courtyard, you can see all three and a half stories.

History & Facts

The history of this cultural institution began in 1891 at the initiative of the outstanding scientist V. V. Dokuchaev. The basis of the first exhibition was his personal scientific collections: thousands of soil samples, hundreds of rock specimens, and an extensive herbarium. Over time, the funds began to grow rapidly thanks to generous donations from patrons.

In 1906, the museum's collection was significantly enriched by K. M. Skarzhinska, who donated more than 20,000 priceless exhibits from her estate. Later, rare Eastern antiquities collected by P. P. Bobrovsky were added. By 1908, the museum moved to the third floor of the magnificent Provincial Zemstvo building, where it remains to this day.

Throughout the 20th century, the museum transformed into the Central Proletarian Museum of the Poltava Region and became an important scientific center. Famous archaeologists and historians such as Mykhailo Rudinsky and Vasyl Shcherbakivsky worked here. Today, the museum is named after its architect, Vasyl Krychevsky, whose vision turned the building into a true symbol of Ukrainian architecture.

Time Needed

To fully appreciate the wealth of the collections and the beauty of the interiors, it is worth setting aside 2 to 3 hours for a visit. This will be enough time to walk through the main halls without rushing, examine the details of the unique carvings, and look into the famous "Treasury."

If you are interested in architecture, allow an extra half hour to inspect the building's facade. The details of the Ukrainian Art Nouveau and the coats of arms of the provincial towns deserve separate attention and detailed study. For those planning a quick look at only the most famous artifacts, an hour and a half may be enough, but such a place invites thoughtful contemplation.
