Lovebirds monument

About

In the heart of the city of Kharkiv lies one of the most touching and inspiring spots — the Lovers' Monument. This graceful sculptural composition, set in a cozy square, has long been a hallmark that Ukraine proudly showcases to its guests.

The monument features two slender, almost weightless figures of a young man and a girl reaching toward each other, their bodies forming a symbolic arch. They are frozen in a kiss, embodying in metal the purity, tenderness, and sincerity of first feelings. The sculpture is distinguished by its light forms and lack of heavy details, making it especially popular among young people.

What to Do

When you arrive at the monument, the first thing to do is view the sculpture from different angles — thanks to its "airy" design, it looks different depending on the perspective. This is an ideal spot for a photoshoot, especially in the rays of the setting sun, when shadows emphasize the fragility of the silhouettes.

Local residents and guests of the city have developed their own kind traditions. Couples often arrange dates here, believing that the energy of the place brings good luck to relationships. The main ritual is connected to the arch formed by the figures: it is believed that if you kiss under it and make a joint wish, it will surely come true, and the union will be long and strong.

Kharkiv's newlyweds also consider it their duty to visit the monument on their wedding day. There is a belief that lightly splashing each other with water from the fountain surrounding the sculpture before sealing a wish with a kiss ensures harmony and happiness in the family. In the evenings, the atmosphere here is particularly cozy, perfect for quiet rest and contemplation.

Getting There

Finding this romantic corner in Kharkiv is easy, as it is located in the very heart of the city. The most convenient way to get there is by using the metro. The sculpture is situated in a square on Pushkinska Street, literally just a couple of minutes' walk from the exit of the "Arkhitektora Beketova" metro station.

If you prefer surface public transport, numerous buses, minibuses, and trams passing through the center stop within walking distance. From the central Freedom Square (Ploshcha Svobody), you can reach the monument on foot in 10–15 minutes, enjoying the architecture of the old city.

For those choosing a taxi or their own car, the intersection of Pushkinska and Zhon Myronosyts streets serves as a landmark. Parking spaces are available along the adjacent streets, although traffic in the center can be heavy on weekdays.

History & Facts

The history of this unusual art object began in 2002. The idea of creating a place dedicated to feelings was born during a meeting between regional leadership and students from Kharkiv's architectural universities. An open competition was announced for the best sketch, featuring young and talented designers.

The winner was a project by Dmytro Ivanchenko, who was a student at the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts at the time. His concept of two fragile figures reaching toward each other in a burst of tenderness perfectly reflected the spirit of youth and love inherent to the city.

The grand opening of the monument took place on September 1, 2002. This event was timed to coincide with Knowledge Day, which is symbolic, as it was the student community that turned this monument into a cult location. Since then, the "Lovers' Monument" has firmly established itself on the list of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

Time Needed

Viewing this attraction will not take much time. Generally, 20–30 minutes is enough for tourists to examine the details of the sculpture, read the commemorative inscriptions, and take a few successful shots against the backdrop of the graceful arch.

If you decide to sit on a bench in the square or plan to perform a small ritual by making a wish, your visit might last up to an hour. This spot is ideal for a short break during a grand tour of Kharkiv.

Working Hours

Since the Lovers' Monument is located in an open city square, it is accessible for visiting 24/7. You can come here early in the morning to avoid the crowds, or late in the evening when the city lighting is turned on, giving the sculpture a special charm.
