As an urban park, it fulfills several functions at once: recreational, cultural, and memorial. Ukraine is rich in places with complex fates, and this location is no exception—the park was established on the site of a former cemetery, which gives its paths a special, slightly nostalgic atmosphere. Here, modern playgrounds sit side-by-side with majestic old monuments.

Today, it is a popular spot for meetings and walks. Well-maintained paths, plenty of greenery, and proximity to major universities make it a favorite destination, particularly among students, which is reflected in its name. It is an ideal place for those who want to feel the authentic spirit of the city and touch its history away from the noisy highways.

What to Do

In Molodiznyi Park, everyone will find something to their liking. Lovers of quiet relaxation can enjoy walking along the shaded alleys, which are especially beautiful during the golden autumn season. Many comfortable benches are installed along the paths, where you can relax with a book or simply watch the city life of Kharkiv. For active visitors, there are sports and children's playgrounds, and the wide alleys are perfect for cycling or scootering.

The memorial aspect of the park deserves special attention. While walking through the grounds, you will see monuments to the victims of the Holodomor and the liquidators of the Chernobyl disaster. The graves of prominent figures whose names are forever etched into the culture of Ukraine have also been preserved here: composer Semen Hulak-Artemovsky, writer Mykola Khvylovy, and artist Serhii Vasylkivsky.

A visit to the Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist is a must. This ancient building is not only an architectural ornament of the park but also an important spiritual center. The combination of religious architecture, historical monuments, and modern infrastructure makes a visit to the park an educational and multifaceted experience.

Getting There

Molodiznyi Park (Youth Park) is located in the central part of Kharkiv on Hryhoriia Skovorody Street (formerly Pushkinska), making it easily accessible for both pedestrians and those using transport. Due to its location, the park is often a key point on tourist routes through the historical center.

The most convenient way to get here is by metro: the "Yaroslava Mudroho" station (formerly "Pushkinska") is in the immediate vicinity. Surface public transport—buses and trolleybuses—also runs nearby, with stops located just a few minutes' walk from the entrance to the green zone. If you prefer comfort, a taxi from the city center will get you to the site in just 5–10 minutes.

For those traveling by car, parking spaces are available along the adjacent streets (Hryhoriia Skovorody and Alchevskykh). However, keep in mind that the city center can be quite busy on weekdays and during peak hours, so it is worth allowing a little extra time to find a parking spot.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in the second half of the 18th century with the founding of the John the Baptist Beheading Cemetery—once the most prestigious in Kharkiv. In those days, prominent scientists, cultural figures, and members of noble families found their final resting place here. In the mid-19th century, the architectural appearance of the necropolis was complemented by the majestic Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, built according to the design of the famous architects A. Thon and O. Polyakov.

During the Soviet period, the attitude toward old cemeteries changed, and in the 1970s, the decision was made to liquidate the necropolis to create a park. Most of the burials were removed; however, the graves of the most iconic figures for the culture of Ukraine were preserved. Thus, the memorial status of the site remained even after its transformation into a recreational zone, creating a unique contrast between historical memory and modern urban space.

Notably, in the late 1980s, construction of a large-scale sports complex for the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute (KhPI) began on the edge of the park. During excavation work, workers repeatedly came across remains of old burials, reminding residents once again of the rich and complex past of this territory. Today, Molodiznyi Park is not just a place for walks in Ukraine, but a genuine multi-layered open-air historical monument.

Time Needed

For a leisurely stroll along the shaded alleys and to view the main monuments, most visitors find 1 to 2 hours sufficient. This is plenty of time to enjoy the park's atmosphere and take some memorable photos.

If you plan to have a small picnic, read a book on a bench, or spend time with children at the playgrounds, your visit could easily last half a day. Given the park's central location, it is convenient to visit in between exploring other city attractions.

Working Hours

Molodiznyi Park is an open urban space that welcomes guests at any time of day. According to official data, the park is open 24/7 (around the clock), allowing for both an early morning run and a quiet evening walk under the lamplight.

Entrance to the park is completely free for all categories of visitors. This makes it an accessible place for relaxation at any time, regardless of your schedule in the city.
