What to Do

Once inside the garden, your first stop should be a walk along its manicured paths. Here, you can see unique collections of ornamental and rare plants, many of which are listed in the Red Data Book. Special attention should be paid to the sections with medicinal herbs and displays representing the flora of various geographical regions.

During the colder months or to get a taste of the tropics, be sure to visit the greenhouses. Under their glass domes, amazing subtropical species are gathered, providing lush greenery all year round. It is the perfect place for those who want to momentarily swap the urban setting for a real jungle atmosphere.

The garden is also a popular venue for photoshoots. Thanks to the variety of landscapes and plants, it is easy to find a picturesque backdrop for your pictures. Additionally, the garden periodically hosts themed exhibitions, workshops, and educational tours where specialists share interesting facts about plant life and their importance to urban ecology.

Getting There

Finding this natural oasis is easy, as it is located in the central part of the city. The Botanical Garden is situated near Nauky Avenue (formerly Gagarin Avenue), making it easily accessible by both public and private transport.

History & Facts

The history of this green space dates back to pre-revolutionary times. As early as the 18th century, rare exotic plants were grown in the gardens of the Potemkin Palace on the territory of the modern city, laying the foundation for botanical interest in the region. However, the first official attempt to create a full-fledged botanical garden was only made in 1903 at the initiative of the Yekaterinoslav Scientific Society, though the project did not receive government support at the time.

The second stage of development began in 1929, when the city allocated land and the necessary resources to organize a scientific base. The official opening of the garden took place in 1931. Its creation was made possible by the monumental efforts of Professor A. V. Reinhard, who became its first director and visionary leader.

Over the decades of its existence, the garden has weathered many challenges but has managed to preserve and expand its collections. Today, it is not only a place for recreation but also a vital scientific center involved in the acclimatization and breeding of plants from all corners of the globe.

Time Needed

To leisurely enjoy the atmosphere and explore the main collections, visitors are recommended to set aside 1.5 to 3 hours. This is usually enough time for a walk along the main paths and to view the seasonal outdoor displays.

If you plan to visit the greenhouses or study rare plant species in detail, your stay may be longer. Photography enthusiasts should also budget an extra half-hour, as the garden offers many picturesque locations for shots against a backdrop of exotic greenery.
