History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1863. Initially, the space in front of the new building of the Alexandrovsk Men's Gymnasium was called Gymnasium Square. Later, the territory was carefully landscaped and turned into a cozy garden, which became a favorite meeting spot for citizens.

The square received its current name in honor of Admiral Mikhail Pavlovich Manganari, an outstanding military governor of the city from 1881–1882. The Admiral's personality is closely linked to the cultural and social flourishing of the region: it was during his tenure that the first public library and a majestic 900-seat theater were opened.

Interestingly, Admiral Manganari not only focused on urban improvement but also made a significant contribution to the development of shipbuilding and water safety by organizing a rescue station on the Inhul River. The square serves as a living reminder of an era when the city was actively growing and turning into an important maritime and educational center.

Time Needed

To leisurely stroll through all the alleys and enjoy the tranquility of the square, 30–60 minutes will be enough. This time is sufficient for a short photo session, observing the nearby historical facades, and a quick rest on one of the benches.

If you plan to combine your visit with a workout at the sports ground or reading a book in the shade of the trees, you can easily spend a couple of hours here, enjoying the calm rhythm of the old city.
