The tower was built from durable Inkerman limestone in just a few months.

During the first major bombardment in October 1854, the upper tier of the structure was heavily damaged. However, the tower remained vital: its massive walls served as a reliable powder magazine, barracks, and even a dressing station. At various times, it housed Rear Admiral V.I. Istomin's headquarters and a field church established at the initiative of Admiral Kornilov.

After the 19th-century conflicts ended, the tower stood neglected for nearly fifty years, gradually falling into ruin. It wasn't until 1901 that architect O.I. Enberg restored it, strictly following Starchenko's original plans. During this time, decorative facing was added while preserving its austere military character.

The location, Malakhov Kurgan, was named after Captain Mikhail Mikhailovich Malakhov, whose battery was stationed here in the early 19th century. Today, the tower is more than just an architectural monument; it is a symbol of resilience, preserving the memory of many generations of the city's defenders.
