History & Facts

The history of this site began in 1903 with a noble goal. On the site of a former high-crime area, the "Sobriety Garden No. 1" was established at the initiative of the Mykolaiv Sobriety Committee. The authorities aimed to create a space that would distract citizens from harmful habits by offering cultural leisure activities instead. A total of 87 species of plants brought from famous Crimean nurseries were planted in the park, and professional gardeners maintained them.

\n

During the Soviet period, specifically in 1922, the park was named after the revolutionary G.I. Petrovsky. During this time, the area was transformed: ceremonial gates, new flower beds, and sculptural compositions appeared. However, World War II caused heavy damage to the park. Occupational forces turned the green zone into a warehouse facility with watchtowers, cutting down a significant portion of the unique trees.

\n

After the war, a large-scale restoration began: exotic flora was reintroduced to the park, returning its status as a green oasis. In 2015, as part of the decommunization process, the site regained its current historical name—Narodnyi Sad (Folk Garden). The monument to Petrovsky, which had stood at the entrance since 1968, was dismantled, opening a new chapter in the park's development.

\n

Today, the park continues to evolve, maintaining its significance as a monument of landscape architecture. Since 2016, the infrastructure has been actively updated and new attractions have appeared, allowing Narodnyi Sad to remain a favorite holiday destination for many generations of city residents.

Time Needed

To leisurely walk through all the alleys and enjoy the natural beauty of the park, an average visitor will need about 2–3 hours. This is plenty of time to stroll, relax on a bench in the shade of exotic trees, and perhaps visit the local attractions.

\n

If your goal is a short introductory walk or if you are simply passing through the park in transit, 1–1.5 hours will suffice. In any case, the peaceful atmosphere of Narodnyi Sad encourages you to take your time and enjoy the moment.
