History & Facts

The formation of the famous Odessa catacombs began in the first half of the 19th century. During this period, the city was experiencing a construction boom, and building the city's grand edifices required a vast amount of coquina (Pontic limestone), which was quarried directly from underground, creating endless labyrinths.

Over decades of stone extraction, a network of passages formed under the city, with a total length reaching several thousand kilometers. Throughout history, these tunnels were used in various ways: they served as reliable hideouts for smugglers, secret bases for revolutionaries, and historical refuges during the mid-20th century.

Since the 1960s, a portion of the catacombs has been granted the special status of an underground paleontological reserve. Even today, researchers find unique artifacts and bones of prehistoric animals here, making "Secrets of Underground Odessa" not just a tourist attraction, but also an important scientific monument.

Time Needed

A full exploration of the museum's exhibition usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. During this time, visitors have enough time to walk the main route, see the most interesting halls and installations, and listen to the guide's captivating stories.

It is recommended not to plan your visit too tightly, as the atmosphere of the underground invites a thoughtful study of the details. Allowing extra time will let you take memorable photos and ask the guide questions about the history of the findings and the legends of the catacombs.

Working Hours

Excursions at the museum are held daily and usually start at 2:00 PM. It is important to remember that visiting is only possible by prior reservation, as the number of places in groups is limited for reasons of safety and comfort.

If necessary, individual tour times can be arranged for large groups by contacting the administration in advance. We recommend checking the current schedule on the official website or via the contact phone numbers before your visit.
