Taras Shevchenko Monument

About

Have you ever wondered where the most monumental image of the Great Kobzar is located? Dnipro is proud to be home to the Taras Shevchenko Monument, the tallest monument to the poet in the world, standing on the picturesque Monastyrskyi Island. This majestic 20-meter composition, cast in iron, has become a true landmark for which Ukraine is famous.

The 55-ton statue is set on a powerful granite pedestal that mimics the steep banks of the Dnipro River. The authors depicted Shevchenko in a moment of deep reflection, his figure slightly turned toward the river as if he is listening to the roar of the rapids he wrote about in his famous poem "Testament" (Zapovit).

Today, this is not just a historical site, but the heart of the city park, where the mastery of casting art and natural beauty blend harmoniously. The monument is impressive in its scale: the enormous sculpture was delivered to the island in parts and assembled on-site, creating a symbol visible from afar from the city's embankment and bridges.

What to Do

The main reason to visit the monument is the observation deck, which offers breathtaking views of the river. Here, you can spend hours watching the water flow, the movement of ships, and the lights of the evening city. Thanks to the monument's colossal height of 20 meters, it serves as an ideal backdrop for large-scale photographs that look spectacular at any time of day.

For art lovers, the visit becomes a fascinating study of details. Try to observe the mastery of the iron casting and find the "mysterious lampas stripes" on the poet's clothing, which local historians love to debate. The atmosphere around the monument is perfect for a quiet rest: you can sit on the parapet with a book of poems or have a small picnic in the shade of the Monastyrskyi Island trees.

A stroll through the surrounding alleys of Shevchenko Park will allow you to feel the historical spirit of this place. The monument is considered a true "place of power," where it is pleasant to simply stand in silence, be inspired by the scale of the poet's personality, and enjoy the fresh river breeze.

Getting There

The famous monument is located at: 2 Monastyrskyi Island Street. Reaching it from the city center is quite easy: a public transport ride takes about 10–15 minutes. You can use trams No. 1, 3, 7, 9, 15, 16 or numerous buses and minibuses (marshrutkas) heading to the “Shevchenko Park” or “Monastyrskyi Island” stops.

If you are traveling from the "Dnipro-Holovnyi" railway station, it is most convenient to take tram No. 1 or No. 7—the journey will take approximately 20 minutes. Travelers arriving from the airport should consider a taxi or a bus to the center with a subsequent transfer, which can take up to an hour in total.

For those who prefer a private car, there are parking zones in the area around Shevchenko Park. During the warmer months, a walk or a bike ride along the city embankment is an excellent option—this allows you to enjoy scenic river views before even reaching the monument itself.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in the 1930s when the Writers' Alley appeared in what was then the Potemkin Garden. Initially, only a modest plaster bust of the Kobzar was installed here, which, unfortunately, did not survive the destruction of the mid-20th century. However, by 1949, a two-meter statue by Ivan Znoba was placed on granite boulders right by the shore, capturing the poet in deep thought.

The memorial took on its modern appearance on November 5, 1959. The new monument was striking: a colossal 55-ton iron figure was mounted on a massive pedestal. Interestingly, the old monument was not destroyed; a few years later, it was moved to the Shevchenko settlement, as it was considered too "intimate" for the main viewpoint of the expanded park.

Many city legends are associated with the installation process and the statue's appearance. Some researchers note unusual details in the poet's clothing, such as lampas stripes on the trousers, which sparked rumors that the pedestal might have originally been intended for another historical figure. Despite the speculation, the monument remains an outstanding example of monumental art, retaining its majesty even after a large-scale reconstruction in 2011.

Time Needed

To leisurely view the monument and enjoy the surrounding panoramas, most travelers need about 1–2 hours. The observation deck and studying the monument's details take no more than half an hour, but the location invites a longer stay.

We recommend setting aside extra time for a walk through the shaded alleys of Monastyrskyi Island and Shevchenko Park. It is an ideal place to relax by the water or take a series of impressive photos against the backdrop of the river, so you certainly won't want to rush away.
