Ivan Mazepa Monument

About

At the very heart of the historical ensemble that Poltava is famous for, stands a majestic monument. The Monument to Ivan Mazepa is a unique landmark, representing the world's first full-length bronze figure of the legendary hetman. The monument is located on the picturesque Soborna Square, complementing the architectural landscape of the old town.

The sculpture is executed in a classical style: the hetman is depicted in full height in traditional attire, and the figure itself is set on a massive granite pedestal whose shape resembles a church bell. This important landmark, which graces Ukraine, symbolizes the continuity of generations and deep respect for history.

The monument stands several meters high, making it visible from a distance. The bronze part was created by craftsmen in Kyiv, while the granite for the base was quarried in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The combination of noble metal and cold stone gives the site a special solemnity and monumentality.

History & Facts

The history of this monument's creation is full of drama and patience. The initiative to establish it arose back in the mid-2000s. Funds for the monument were raised literally by the entire community: donations came from ordinary citizens across the country and members of the diaspora.

Although the bronze figure itself was fully ready and cast back in 2009, the path to its installation took a whole seven years. Due to various bureaucratic hurdles and disputes over the location, the finished monument was kept in storage for a long time. Throughout this period, the public never ceased its efforts to obtain official permission for its installation.

The long-awaited grand opening finally took place on May 7, 2016. About 2,500 people attended the ceremony, highlighting the significance of this event for the city's residents and the cultural life of the entire country. Today, the monument is considered one of Poltava's most important modern symbols.

Time Needed

For a simple viewing of the monument and a short rest on the square, 30–60 minutes will be quite enough. This is sufficient time to examine the details of the bronze casting, take commemorative photos, and read the information on the pedestal.

If you plan to combine your visit with a tour of the neighboring Holy Dormition Cathedral and a walk to the observation deck overlooking the Vorskla River, we recommend setting aside about 1.5–2 hours for this location.

Working Hours

Since the monument is located in an open public square, it is accessible 24/7, daily. You can visit early in the morning to avoid crowds or in the evening when the square takes on a special charm under the lamplight.

No entrance tickets or special permits are required. However, to stay updated on cultural events taking place on the square, we recommend occasionally checking the city's official tourism portals.
