The first written mentions of this place date back to chronicles from 1492. The island got its name from an ancient legend, according to which a Byzantine monastery once stood here, destroyed during the Mongol-Tatar invasion in the 13th century. For a long time, until the mid-20th century, the island was known as Bogomolivskyi, named after the merchant Ivan Bogomolov, who purchased it in 1889. Even earlier, in the 1820s, exotic plants and resinous trees were actively planted here, turning this piece of land into a true botanical garden amidst the water. Interestingly, the island was originally half its current size: it gained its modern length and spacious sandy shores through artificial sand reclamation.

The modern stage of the beach area's development began in the 1950s when a general plan for creating large-scale recreation zones was adopted. It was then that the famous pedestrian bridge appeared, and the island itself changed its name to Komsomolskyi for several decades. One of the architectural landmarks of this area is the Merefa-Kherson Bridge, opened in 1931, whose delicate openwork supports can be seen in the oldest photographs of the local beach.

The beach area on the island is a public space, so access is open 24/7 every day of the week, including weekends and holidays. You can come here early in the morning for a jog by the water or late in the evening to admire the night lights of the city.

However, keep in mind that the accompanying infrastructure, such as the cable car, rental points, or cafes, operates on its own schedule, which is usually limited to daylight hours or the summer season. The most comfortable and safe time to visit is between dawn and late evening.
