The park features a unique semi-circular layout and stands out with its grand entrance—a tall stone arch on the side of Sevastopolskaya Street. From here, a picturesque green alley leads deep into the cozy quarters. In the center of the park stands a monument to the prominent poet Taras Shevchenko, which has become an important cultural landmark for locals and guests alike.

Today, this spot is perfect for family leisure: following extensive renovations, the park now boasts convenient paths, modern lighting, and, most importantly, a large inclusive children's playground. History and film buffs will certainly appreciate the fact that scenes for the legendary film “Kidnapping, Caucasian Style” were filmed right here among these alleys.

It is pleasant to simply stroll along the tiled paths, admiring the architecture of the classic entrance arch, which serves as a beautiful backdrop for souvenir photos. Be sure to reach the central section to see the monument to Taras Shevchenko and experience the quiet atmosphere of this historical site.

Sports enthusiasts will find outdoor workout areas here, which are perfect for a morning stretch or a full workout.

Fans of classic cinema can treat themselves to a mini-tour, trying to find the camera angles familiar from episodes of “Kidnapping, Caucasian Style”. In the evening, when the lanterns are lit, the park turns into a romantic spot, ideal for meeting friends or enjoying a slow break on a bench with a book. It is always clean and cozy, making the park an excellent choice for daily walks.

Getting There

Getting to this green corner in the western part of the city is easy. The park is located at 12 Batumskaya Street, between the busy Sevastopolskaya Street and the quiet Rabochiy Poselok area. Thanks to its central location, it is convenient to reach both by public transport and by car.

You can take buses, trolleybuses, or shuttle taxis to the "Sevastopolskaya St" or "Rabochiy Poselok" stops. From there, it is just a leisurely 2–5 minute walk to the majestic entrance arch. The journey from the city center by public transport takes about 15–20 minutes, while those who enjoy walking can reach the park in about half an hour.

For those who prefer a taxi or personal vehicle, the drive from the center takes no more than 10 minutes. Cars can be left in the parking areas along the adjacent streets—Sevastopolskaya or Voykova. There are entrances to the park from several sides, making it very accessible from any direction.

History & Facts

The history of this location began in 1924, when the land was allocated for the creation of a new green zone for the city. Active development of the territory took place in the early 1930s. Initially, the park was called Profsoyuzny (Trade Union) Park and quickly became a popular cultural and leisure hub for residents of the neighboring Rabochiy Poselok.

The park received its current name in 1964 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great poet and artist Taras Shevchenko. It was then that the first monument to the writer was installed at the intersection of the alleys. In 1997, the park's appearance was enhanced with a new bust of Shevchenko, which the city of Kalush presented as a gift to Simferopol. Interestingly, due to the monument's unusual proportions, locals sometimes jokingly refer to it as the "Matchstick."

Cinematic fame came to the park in 1966, when it served as a backdrop for the legendary Soviet comedy “Kidnapping, Caucasian Style” (Kavkazskaya Plennitsa). This is where the famous scene of Shurik's escape from the psychiatric hospital was filmed. In the Soviet era, the park also featured a go-kart track and a dance floor, which were later removed during major renovations.

The park took on its modern look after a series of reconstructions. In 2014, tiles featuring traditional patterns were laid, and in 2022, one of the city's best inclusive playgrounds was opened. Today, the park harmoniously combines historical heritage with modern infrastructure for comfortable recreation.

Time Needed

Taras Shevchenko Park is a fairly compact location, so a visit won't take much time. For a relaxed tour of the main sights, such as the entrance arch and the monument to the poet, as well as a stroll along the central alley, 1–1.5 hours is usually sufficient.

If you are planning a trip with children, it is worth setting aside about 2–3 hours. The large inclusive playground with its mazes and swings is sure to keep young travelers entertained for a long time. This also allows you to rest leisurely on one of the benches in the shade of the trees or have a small photoshoot against the backdrop of the classic colonnade.

Working Hours

Taras Shevchenko Park is open to visitors around the clock (24 hours a day). This makes it accessible for walks at any time that suits you—be it an early morning jog or a late-night promenade under the glow of the streetlights.

The operating schedule remains the same throughout the week: from Monday to Sunday inclusive. You can plan your visit without worrying about closing times, as entry to the grounds is always free.
