History & Facts

The history of European Square is inextricably linked with the development of the city center. In the past, this territory was part of the Alexandria Garden and was perceived more as a cozy park. The situation changed at the beginning of the 20th century when the site became a focal point for important city gatherings and rallies.

A true architectural breakthrough was the construction of the famous Water Tower in 1912. The project was designed by the outstanding architect Hryhoriy Artynov. It was then that the square began to acquire its modern status as an important engineering and cultural hub, although for a long time it still resembled a large, well-maintained courtyard.

The location received its current name and appearance as a major public space in the 21st century. In 2013, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out, transforming it into a modern recreation area. Notably, the historical tower has functioned as a museum since 1985, carefully preserving the memory of bygone times.

Time Needed

For a comfortable introduction to the location, visitors usually need about 1 to 2 hours. This time is quite sufficient to leisurely stroll along the shaded alleys, examine the architectural details of the Water Tower, and take commemorative photos.

If you plan to visit the museum inside the tower or want to linger in one of the nearby cafes to feel the rhythm of city life, it is worth setting aside a bit more time for your visit. This place is perfect for a relaxing break in the middle of a busy sightseeing day.

Working Hours

European Square is open for free visits 24/7 (Open 24 hours) every day of the week, from Monday to Sunday. This allows guests of the city to enjoy the beauty of the evening illumination or watch the sunrise in the silence of the empty alleys.

Keep in mind that the Water Tower and the museum located within it have their own operating hours. If you plan to go inside, it is recommended to check the schedule in advance on-site or on the museum's official resources, as it may change depending on the season.
