Getting There

Getting to this recreation area is quite easy thanks to the city's well-developed transport network. The fastest and most convenient way is to use the Kyiv Metro. You will need the Hidropark station (Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska line). From the metro exit, it is just a 5–10 minute walk to the sandy shores near the Metro Bridge, simply follow the signs to the beach areas.

If you prefer to travel by car, take Brovarsky Avenue or come from the Rusanivska Embankment side. There are parking zones in the Hidropark area, though finding a free spot on weekends and holidays can be challenging due to the location's popularity. You can also take a taxi from the city center—the ride is very short if there is no heavy traffic.

For those choosing ground-based public transport, various buses and shuttle taxis run towards Hidropark. This is a great opportunity to combine your trip with a mini-tour of the city's left-bank districts before diving into the relaxing beach atmosphere.

History & Facts

The history of this area dates back to the end of the 18th century. Originally, Peredmistna Slobidka was a settlement for workers employed at the famous Arsenal factory. Life here was closely tied to the river: in summer, residents crossed to the right bank by boat, and in winter, they walked directly across the ice. The settlement received its official name in the mid-19th century, when the construction of the Nicholas Chain Bridge in 1853 reliably connected the banks of the Dnieper.

Interestingly, the romantic nickname "Venice" stuck to this district among Kyiv residents. This was due to the numerous picturesque bays and channels that gave the area a unique aquatic character. However, proximity to the river had its downsides: the territory was regularly flooded during spring thaws, which eventually required extensive hydraulic sand-filling work.

The original settlement was significantly impacted during the mid-20th century. In the post-war period, specifically in the 1960s, it was decided to create a large-scale recreation zone on this historical site—the modern-day Hidropark. In 1947, Kyiv's youth actively participated in greening the deserted banks, planting trees and reinforcing the sandy slopes to transform them into a blooming park.

The tradition of beach recreation began here as early as the start of the 20th century. It was then that the first equipped areas for swimming and sunbathing appeared on the islands, laying the foundation for what is today one of the most beloved leisure spots in Kyiv.

Time Needed

If you just want to take a quick dip in the cool waters of the Dnieper and get a bit of a tan, 2–3 hours will be quite enough. This is plenty of time to enjoy the atmosphere and take some beautiful photos with the Metro Bridge in the background.

However, if you plan to have a full picnic, play active games, or combine beach relaxation with a long walk through the shaded alleys of Hidropark, it’s better to set aside half a day (about 5–6 hours). During the warm season, you can easily spend the entire day here, moving from swimming to lunch at one of the local cafes and evening walks along the channels.

Working Hours

The beach area and the park grounds are generally open to visitors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing you to enjoy walks by the water even late in the evening. However, please note that accompanying services (boat rentals, cafes, and sports equipment) have their own operating hours, typically from 09:00 to 21:00.

To get the latest information on special events or potential changes in the operating hours of specific recreation zones, we recommend checking official city portals or tourism websites.
