Nature lovers will find it interesting to observe the life of the garden on the banks of the Putyatynka River. The landscape here is very dynamic, allowing for excellent landscape photography. For those interested in gardening, this is a unique chance to see how highbush blueberries, raspberries, and other berry crops are grown for scientific purposes.

History & Facts

The history of this green corner began in 1933. The garden was founded on the initiative of faculty and students of the then Zhytomyr Agricultural Institute. The first alleys and experimental plots were laid by hand on the banks of the winding Putyatynka River, turning a wasteland into a scientific research base.

Over the decades, the garden developed alongside the university, becoming home to rare species of flora. In 2012, its status was officially confirmed at the state level — it received the status of a natural monument of national importance. This emphasizes not only the aesthetic but also the immense scientific value of the site for the entire country.

In 2013, celebrating its 80th anniversary, the garden significantly updated its collections. For the jubilee, donated saplings of sakura, ginkgo biloba, and weeping cherry were planted here. Today, the garden continues to serve as an important center for plant introduction, where scientists study how exotic species adapt to the conditions of the Ukrainian Polissia.

Time Needed

To leisurely walk through the main alleys and examine the unique plant collections, most visitors need about 1 to 2 hours. This is quite enough for a peaceful stroll and a few beautiful photos against the backdrop of exotic trees.

If you plan to study the information plaques in detail, relax by the river, or participate in an educational tour, it is worth allocating about 3 hours for the visit. The garden invites contemplative relaxation, so there is no desire to rush here at all.

Working Hours

Since the garden is a structural department of the university and a scientific research facility, its operating schedule may change depending on the season and ongoing educational internships.

Before planning a visit, we strongly recommend checking the information on the official website of Polissia National University or clarifying the current visiting hours by phone. Usually, access for tourists is open during daylight hours on weekdays, but there may be exceptions for weekends and holidays.

Nearby

Exploring the surroundings of the Botanical Garden will allow you to dive deeper into the city's atmosphere and see its different facets — from touching monuments to modern entertainment centers. A walk through the Levkivka district is easily combined with a visit to Zhytomyr's key locations.
