Built in the second half of the 18th century, the church originally served as a Dominican church. Its facades were once adorned with exquisite statues, and today visitors are greeted by a solemn interior that houses copies of the region's most revered miraculous icons: those of Pochaiv, Zarvanytsia, Ternopil, and Terebovlia. The cathedral is the active seat of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and an important spiritual center.

Beyond its architectural value, the cathedral attracts pilgrims with its relics. Here, you can see the relics of Saint Charbel and other martyrs, as well as a unique artifact—a stone brought from the Holy Land, from the very spot where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount. This is a place where history, art, and faith intertwine, offering every guest a moment of peace and inspiration.

What to Do

A visit to the cathedral offers guests of Ternopil a diverse experience: from aesthetic appreciation of its architecture to deep spiritual immersion. First, take a close look at the Baroque facade and gaze up at its massive towers. Inside the church, be sure to notice the restored frescoes and the rich decoration of the altar area. If you are lucky enough to be there during a service, you can hear the solemn sounds of the organ, which fills the cathedral space with incredible acoustics.

For pilgrims and believers, the cathedral's shrines are the main focus. You can venerate the copies of the famous icons of the Mother of God or pay your respects to the saints at their relics. Of particular interest is the stone from the site of the Sermon on the Mount, placed in an accessible area for viewing. The atmosphere inside the church invites quiet reflection, allowing for a temporary escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the cathedral as one of the city's best locations for architectural shots. The building looks especially striking in the rays of the setting sun or under evening illumination. Occasionally, visitors have the opportunity to climb higher to see the panorama of the central streets, but even a simple walk around the church and in its courtyard will leave a pleasant impression of touching living history.

Getting There

Finding the cathedral is easy, as it is located in the very heart of the city at 14 Hetmana Sahaidachnoho Street. History & Facts

The history of this majestic structure began in 1749, when the city's owner, Józef Potocki, initiated the construction of the Dominican Church of St. Vincent Ferrer. The church was built over three decades on the site of the old Mary's Church, which had been destroyed during historical raids. The project was designed by the famous architect August Moszyński, who created one of the region's finest examples of Late Baroque architecture.

In the 19th century, the building's purpose changed several times: from 1820 to 1901, it was managed by the Jesuits, who opened a gymnasium in the monastic cells. Later, the church returned to the Dominicans. In the early 20th century, under the leadership of Władysław Sadłowski, a large-scale restoration took place: a new dome was added, the interior paintings were updated, and an organ was installed, turning the church into a true cultural center for the city.

The cathedral faced significant challenges in 1944 when the building was severely damaged, and its restoration lasted until the late 1950s. During the Soviet period, it housed an art gallery, and it wasn't until 1989 that the shrine was returned to the faithful. Today, it is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the main church of the local Greek Catholic eparchy, fully restored and returned to its spiritual purpose.
