What to Do

The main attraction that makes Eldridge Park a must-visit is undoubtedly the historical Looff Carousel. Taking a ride on one of the twenty carved wooden figures—horses or even a majestic lion—is an essential ritual for every guest. A walk along the paved midway, surrounded by greenery, captures the spirit of old-fashioned fairs.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the park offers boat rentals on the quiet pond, where you can observe local wildlife. Children will be delighted by the pony carts and the modern playgrounds added in recent years. Don't forget to take a commemorative photo by the famous American Girl horse statue, which is an important part of local folklore.

If you are looking for solitude, head out on the walking trails that wind around the lake. Numerous picturesque picnic spots are set up here, where you can relax under the shade of weeping willows. The many fountains and sculptures add a special charm, turning a simple walk into a fascinating exploration of Victorian landscape design.

Getting There

The most convenient way to reach this picturesque spot in Elmira is by car. The main route follows Route 17 (I-86), where you should take the exit leading directly to Eldridge Park Dr. Spacious parking is available on-site for visitors, and the drive from the city center takes only 5–10 minutes along shady, willow-lined avenues.

If you prefer public transportation, you can use the Chemung County Transit bus network, which serves various city stops. From there, it is a short taxi ride or a walk (about 2–3 km) to the park gates. For those arriving from other regions, the nearest Amtrak station and Elmira Corning Regional Airport are within a 10–20 minute drive.

History & Facts

The history of this location began in 1857, when pharmacist Dr. Edwin Eldridge purchased a plot of land with a lake. He dreamed of creating the perfect sculpture garden where his patients could improve their health by walking among fountains and statues. By 1870, the park had opened its doors to the general public, becoming a cultural hub for the region with its own casino-restaurant and observatory.

One of the park's most touching legends is the story of the famous horse American Girl. In 1875, the animal collapsed during a race at the local track, and a magnificent statue costing $2,500—a huge sum at the time—was erected in her memory. This monument remains one of the park's key symbols.

A new wave of popularity arrived in 1924 when the legendary Looff carousel, brought from Atlantic City, was installed. Despite periods of decline and flooding, the park was fully restored thanks to the efforts of volunteers and the Carousel Preservation Society. Today, it carefully preserves its 150-year history, remaining a living monument to the Victorian era.

Time Needed

To enjoy a leisurely stroll through the shaded alleys, explore the vintage sculptures, and ride the legendary attractions, 2–3 hours is usually sufficient. This is enough time to soak in the Victorian garden atmosphere and enjoy the views of the pond.

If you are planning a trip with children, it is worth setting aside half a day (about 4 hours). This allows for a full picnic on one of the green lawns, feeding the wild birds by the lake, and spending more time at the Midway playgrounds.
