General Weather Character

The city of Thanh Hoa, located in Vietnam, is characterized by a tropical monsoon climate. This means the weather here is warm throughout most of the year, with noticeable fluctuations in humidity and rainfall depending on the season. Average annual temperatures are comfortable for travel, though seasonal specifics should be taken into account.

Two main seasons are clearly distinguished in Thanh Hoa. The hot and humid season usually lasts from May to October. During this time, temperatures reach their maximum values, often exceeding 30°C, and rainfall increases significantly, especially in July, August, and September, when the highest number of rainy days is observed. From November to April, a cooler and drier season sets in. Temperatures during this period are more moderate, fluctuating on average from 18°C to 26°C, and rain falls much less frequently, making this time more predictable for outdoor activities and excursions.

Thus, when planning a trip to Thanh Hoa, it is important to consider these seasonal changes. The summer months bring tropical heat and a high probability of rain, while the winter and spring months offer drier and cooler weather, which may be more comfortable for many tourists.

Temperature

Thanh Hoa experiences a warm climate throughout most of the year, with clearly defined seasons. The annual range of average temperatures varies from a relatively cool 18.0°C in January to a hot 30.9°C in June. The hottest months are traditionally June and July, when average maximum temperatures rise to 34.1°C and 33.2°C respectively, and the average temperature stays above 30°C. The coolest months are considered to be January and December, when the average temperature is around 18°C, and nighttime lows can drop to 15.1°C.

The summer period in Thanh Hoa, which lasts roughly from May to September, is characterized by hot and humid weather. Average daytime temperatures during this time consistently exceed 30-32°C, and nights remain very warm, with minimums rarely dropping below 25-27°C. Significant rainfall, especially from July to September when the number of rainy days can reach 20-23 per month, contributes to high humidity. Winter, covering December, January, and February, is quite mild and comfortably cool here. Average temperatures in these months range between 18-19.6°C, with daytime highs around 20-22°C and nighttime lows in the region of 15-16°C.

Daily temperature fluctuations in Thanh Hoa throughout the year are moderate; the difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows is usually about 5-7°C. This means that even on the hottest summer days, nights bring some relief from the heat, and in the cool winter months, the temperature drop is not too drastic. The spring months (March, April) and autumn months (October, November) are transitional, with a gradual rise or fall in temperatures, comfortable weather, and moderate rainfall.

Precipitation

The city of Thanh Hoa observes distinct seasonality in precipitation. The year can be clearly divided into wet and dry seasons. The wet season usually falls between May and October, bringing the bulk of the annual rainfall. The dry season, conversely, covers the months from November to April, when the amount of rain decreases significantly.

The peak of precipitation in Thanh Hoa occurs in the summer and early autumn months. The wettest month is September, when an average of about 11 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 22. August (about 10 mm of precipitation and 23 rainy days) and July (about 9 mm of precipitation and 20 rainy days) follow closely behind. During these months, rains can be quite frequent and intense. May and June are also characterized by increased rainfall, marking the beginning of the wet period, with 6 mm and 4 mm respectively, and 14 and 12 rainy days.

The dry season is most pronounced from December to February. In December, January, and February, a minimal amount of precipitation falls – only about 1 mm in each of these months. The number of rainy days is also low: for example, in December there are on average only 6, and in February – 7. November, March, and April are transitional months when precipitation is also low (about 2 mm), but the number of days with rain may be slightly higher, reaching 9-10 days. Overall, during the dry period, rains are rare and, as a rule, not prolonged. Snow is not characteristic for Thanh Hoa.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Thanh Hoa, it is important to consider the pronounced seasonality of the weather to ensure your luggage is packed correctly. The city is characterized by a hot and humid season, which usually lasts from May to October, and a cooler and drier season from November to April. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity.

In the hot and humid season (May-October), when average temperatures range from 25°C to 34°C and the number of rainy days increases significantly (especially from July to September, when there can be up to 23 rainy days per month), pack light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses will be very appropriate. Be sure to bring a reliable raincoat or a light waterproof jacket and an umbrella. Also, do not forget high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as the sun can be active even on cloudy days. Insect repellent will also be useful, especially in the evening.

The cooler and drier season (November-April) is characterized by more moderate temperatures, especially from December to February (averaging 15°C - 22°C), and significantly less rainfall. During this period, layered clothing is ideal: light sweaters, cardigans, long-sleeved t-shirts, and a light jacket or windbreaker, especially for evening walks or early mornings. Long trousers or jeans will be comfortable. Although there is less rain, a small foldable umbrella may still come in handy in case of sudden precipitation, especially during transitional months such as April.
