What to Do

The main reason to visit Lëkurësi Castle is, undoubtedly, the opportunity to climb its massive walls. A walk along the perimeter of the fortress turns into a real photo session, as every corner reveals a new perspective of the coast. We especially recommend being here during sunset hours, when the sinking sun paints the castle walls and the sea surface in golden and crimson tones.

Inside the fortress courtyard, there is a restaurant with an authentic atmosphere where visitors can sample traditional Albanian cuisine. This is a wonderful opportunity to combine gastronomic pleasure with the contemplation of ancient architecture. During the summer season, cultural evenings with live music and folk dances are often held here.

For history enthusiasts, exploring the surviving fragments of the towers and stonework will be of great interest. Walking through the grounds, it is easy to imagine how the strait was monitored hundreds of years ago. The castle also serves as an excellent starting point for short hikes through the hills surrounding Sarandë.

Getting There

Reaching the fortress is quite easy, as it is located just 2–3 kilometers from the city center. The most convenient way is by taxi or a rental car — the road leads directly to the gates, where parking is available.

For those who prefer a scenic walk, an uphill hike is also possible. The trek from the promenade takes about 30–40 minutes. Although the road is steep and requires a certain level of physical fitness, it is fully paved and offers picturesque views of the residential neighborhoods and the sea as you gain elevation.

Organized tour groups also frequently visit the castle by bus. If you are staying in the center, you can also arrange a round-trip transfer with local drivers.

History & Facts

The majestic Lëkurësi Castle was built in 1538. The order for its construction was given by the famous Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who required a powerful defensive point in this part of the Balkans.

The main purpose of the fortress was to control the strategically important strait separating the mainland from the island of Corfu. The castle walls served as a reliable defense against potential maritime attacks and allowed for dominance over the entire surrounding territory.

Legend has it that after the capture of Corfu, the Sultan personally chose the site for this fortification to ensure the security of his domains. Over the centuries, the garrison departed, and the fortress gradually transformed from a formidable military site into a silent witness to history.

Despite the fact that time has not spared some of the structures, the general outlines and architectural style of the Ottoman era have been preserved to this day. Today, the castle is recognized as an important cultural and architectural monument, carefully protected by the state.

Time Needed

To explore the fortress architecture, take panoramic photos, and relax a bit, 1.5–2 hours is sufficient for most travelers. This is the optimal time for a thoughtful introduction to the site without rushing.

If you decide to stay for lunch or dinner at the local restaurant to enjoy the sunset atmosphere over the Ionian Sea, plan to spend about 3-4 hours. Evenings at the castle are particularly popular with tourists, so your visit might last longer due to the pleasant surroundings.
