Banlung
Current Weather
Overview
The climate in Banlung can be described as tropical monsoon, with high temperatures throughout the year. The weather here is quite predictable and clearly divided into two main periods: the dry season and the rainy season. Thanks to its location in Ratanakiri Province, the city is surrounded by lush greenery that particularly flourishes during the rainy period but remains picturesque even during the drier months.
The dry season, which lasts roughly from November to April, is considered the most favorable time for classic tourism. In January and February, there is practically no precipitation, creating ideal conditions for long walks and trekking. With the arrival of May, the picture changes: the wet season begins, reaching its peak from July to September. During these months, rain can occur almost daily, refreshing the air and filling the local waterfalls with power.
The temperature regime in Banlung is stable but has its own seasonal nuances. The hottest months are March and April, when daytime temperatures often rise above 35°C. The most comfortable and "cool" weather sets in during December and January: at this time, night temperatures can drop to a pleasant 21°C, giving travelers a welcome freshness after a sunny day.
Temperature
The climate in Banlung is characterized by high temperatures throughout the year, but the feel of the weather depends heavily on the season. The hottest period falls in the spring months, especially March and April, when the average air temperature exceeds 30°C. During this time, the daytime heat can be quite intense, with maximums reaching 36°C, making these months ideal for lovers of true tropical sun, though caution is needed during the midday hours.
The so-called "winter" season, occurring in December and January, brings a long-awaited freshness, although the weather remains summer-warm. This is the most comfortable time for travel: the average temperature drops to 26-27°C. A characteristic feature of this period is significant daily fluctuations: after a hot day, when the air warms up to 31-32°C, the nights bring pleasant coolness, and the temperature can fall to 21°C. This contrast allows for a break from the daytime heat without needing air conditioning.
With the arrival of the rainy season (from May to October), the temperature regime becomes more even but humid. Summer months, such as July and August, are characterized by an average temperature of about 27°C. Due to cloud cover and precipitation, the gap between day and night temperatures narrows, and the extreme heat subsides, giving way to mild but humid warmth. Even on the rainiest days, the thermometer confidently stays around 30°C during the day.

Precipitation
Banlung has a pronounced seasonality of precipitation, typical of Cambodia's tropical monsoon climate. The year is clearly divided into dry and wet periods. The dry season lasts from December to February, when the probability of rain is minimized. In January and February, there is practically no precipitation (0 mm), and the number of days with precipitation does not exceed one or two per month, making this an ideal time for walks and excursions.
With the arrival of spring, the situation changes: as early as April, the number of rainy days increases to 11, and the full rainy season begins in May. The wettest months are July and August, when it rains almost daily (up to 30 rainy days per month), and precipitation levels reach their peak (up to 15 mm). During this period, showers can be frequent, but it is because of them that the region's nature acquires its deep emerald color.
A gradual decrease in precipitation begins in October, although this month remains quite rainy (about 23 days with precipitation). The final transition to dry weather occurs in November: the number of rainy days decreases to 10, and the volume of precipitation drops to 3 mm, preparing the city for the sunny winter season.

Packing Tips
A trip to Banlung requires preparation for a hot tropical climate, so the foundation of your wardrobe should be items made of light natural fabrics, such as cotton and linen. In the dry season, especially in March and April when daytime temperatures often exceed 35°C, shorts, T-shirts, and a reliable hat for protection from the intense sun will be indispensable. If your trip falls in December or January, it's worth bringing a light sweater or windbreaker: in the evenings, the air can cool down to 21°C, which feels chilly after the daytime heat, especially when riding a motorbike.
From May to October, the region experiences the rainy season, and the number of rainy days can reach 30 per month. During this period, be sure to pack a high-quality raincoat or poncho, as well as waterproof covers for documents and electronics. Instead of heavy clothing, it's better to use a layering principle and choose quick-drying synthetic materials, as high humidity won't allow items to dry quickly on their own.
Pay special attention to footwear: for walks to waterfalls and Yeak Laom Lake, you will need comfortable trekking sandals or sneakers with non-slip soles that can handle mud. Don't forget to bring sunscreen with a high protection factor, sunglasses, and insect repellent, which will be useful at any time of year. Also, be sure to pack swimwear to enjoy a dip in the crater lakes and under the waterfalls.
