The specialty of this place lies in its "intimate listening atmosphere." You won't find blaring TVs or intrusive background noise here—the entire space is designed so that the audience and artists are in complete harmony. The club recently moved to a new, more spacious location in the Oakville Commons mall, while maintaining its unique spirit and traditions.

Today, under the management of new owner Mike Wharton, the venue continues to delight guests with performances by Canadian talent almost every night. The club is open 364 days a year, offering not only great sound but also an updated menu with an emphasis on hearty meals. This is not just a bar, but the heart of the city's music community, where respect for creativity and friendly interaction are highly valued.

What to Do

The main reason to visit The Moonshine Cafe is, undoubtedly, the live concerts. Every night, performers of various genres take the stage: from roots folk and blues to contemporary singer-songwriters. Since the room is designed as a listening room, you can enjoy flawless sound and feel an incredible closeness to the musicians on stage.

In addition to the musical program, guests are invited to try the updated menu, which now features excellent dinner options: juicy burgers, flavorful BBQ, and a variety of sausages. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a glass of cold beer in the company of friends or like-minded people.

For those who appreciate history, it will be interesting to see interior elements carefully moved from the old building on Kerr Street. The original stage and old sign create a sense of continuity between generations. Be sure to sign up for the mailing list or check the website calendar—this will help you catch performances by iconic artists like Steve Poltz or Bob Snider, who make evenings at this cafe unforgettable.

Getting There

Getting to the club's new location is easy. The cafe is now situated in the Oakville Commons mall at the intersection of Kerr St and Speers Rd. If you are driving from Toronto or neighboring cities, it is most convenient to take the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) to the Oakville exit and then follow Speers Rd to the intersection. The new location benefits from ample parking, which makes things much easier for drivers.

For those who prefer public transport, buses from the local Halton Region Transit network stop near the shopping center. If you are in the city center, you can use a taxi or Uber. Pedestrians familiar with the previous address will find the new way easily—just walk up Kerr St from the old building at number 137.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 2006, when school friends John Marlatt and Jane Mackay decided to create a unique music listening space at 137 Kerr Street. For nearly two decades, The Moonshine Cafe served as a stronghold for independent artists, earning a reputation as one of the most respected venues in Southern Ontario. John, a passionate music lover, personally oversaw the sound quality and cultivated the homey atmosphere that thousands of people came to love.

Following John's passing in 2023 and the end of the lease on the historic building, the venue's future was at risk. However, thanks to the initiative of Mike Wharton, a loyal patron since the cafe's opening, the legendary name was saved. A GoFundMe campaign was launched, through which the community of musicians and listeners raised approximately $25,000 for renovations and the move.

In September 2025, the cafe opened its new chapter at 568 Kerr St. Notably, the new owners carefully preserved a piece of the old location: the original stage, furniture, and even the interior wood paneling were moved. Even the old sign now adorns the window of the new room, connecting the club's rich history with its promising future.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the live performance atmosphere and try the dishes from the updated menu, it is recommended to set aside 1 to 3 hours for your visit. Typically, guests arrive early to secure comfortable seats and have dinner before the set begins.

If you are a true music lover, it is worth planning for an entire evening. Concert programs are usually structured so that the listener can fully immerse themselves in the artist's work without distractions. Given the venue's intimate format, time flies by quickly amidst interesting conversations and high-quality sound.
