General Weather Overview

The climate in Jinan is characterised as continental, with four clearly defined seasons. This means travellers can expect significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year. Winters here are quite cold, with average temperatures around zero or slightly below, and little precipitation. Spring brings rapid warming, turning into a warm and sunny summer.

The summer months, especially July and August, are the hottest and most humid in Jinan. Average temperatures rise to a comfortable 26-28°C; however, it is during this period that the bulk of precipitation falls, indicating a distinct wet season. Autumn, conversely, delights with pleasant coolness and fewer rainy days, creating comfortable conditions for walking and sightseeing before the onset of winter cold.

Temperature

Jinan experiences a significant annual temperature range, typical of a continental climate. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature is around -0.3°C, with nightly lows potentially dropping to -5.0°C, and daytime highs rarely exceeding 4.5°C. Similar conditions are observed in December with an average temperature of 0.4°C. Conversely, the hottest month is July, with an average temperature of 27.7°C, followed by June with 26.8°C and August with 26.4°C. The annual range of average temperatures fluctuates from negative values in winter to nearly 28°C in summer.

The summer months in Jinan, from June to August, are characterised as hot. Daytime highs during this period consistently exceed 30°C (reaching 32.1°C in June), and night-time temperatures rarely drop below 21.5°C. July stands out in particular, where the average maximum temperature is 31.5°C, and the minimum is 23.9°C. Winter, covering December, January, and February, brings cool and at times frosty weather. Average daytime temperatures range from 4.5°C to 7.8°C, while night-time temperatures regularly fall below zero, reaching -5.0°C in January.

The transitional seasons – spring and autumn – demonstrate notable temperature fluctuations. For example, in March, the average temperature is 10.4°C, but the difference between the average minimum (4.7°C) and maximum (16.0°C) temperature is quite substantial, indicating cool nights and warm days. A similar trend is observed in October, where the average temperature is 15.1°C, and the spread between night-time (10.0°C) and daytime (20.1°C) temperatures is also significant. This highlights the need to be prepared for changeable weather, especially during the shoulder seasons.

Precipitation

Jinan observes a distinct seasonality in precipitation distribution throughout the year. A wetter season falling on the summer months and a very dry period covering mainly winter are clearly traceable. This means that precipitation amounts, although small overall, and their frequency vary noticeably depending on the time of year, which is important to consider when planning a trip.

The greatest, though still moderate, amount of precipitation falls in summer. July and August are the wettest months, when 6 mm of precipitation is recorded each. These months also see the highest number of days with precipitation: on average 14 in July, and 12 in August. This suggests that summer precipitation likely takes the form of frequent but very light rain or drizzle. June also belongs to this wetter period with 2 mm of precipitation and 7 days with precipitation.

Winter months, by contrast, are characterised as exceptionally dry. In January, March, and December, the average rainfall amount is 0 mm, and the number of days with precipitation is minimal – just 2 days in January and December, and 3 days in March. Given the negative average temperatures in January (-0.3°C) and near-zero in December (0.4°C), any extremely rare winter precipitation, if it occurs during these 2 "wet" days, is highly likely to fall as snow or icy drizzle. February is also very dry, with 1 mm of precipitation and 3 days with it.

Spring and autumn months are also distinguished by very low precipitation levels. In April, May, September, October, and November, amounts are just 1-2 mm per month. The number of days with precipitation during these periods is also small, varying from 4 to 6 days. This means that even in the shoulder seasons, the probability of encountering significant precipitation in Jinan remains low; most often, these will be merely traces of precipitation or very short-lived phenomena.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Jinan, it is important to consider significant seasonal weather fluctuations. In winter (December-February), it is quite cold here; average temperatures hover around zero, and night-time temperatures can drop to -5°C. Therefore, warm items must be in your suitcase: jumpers, fleece jackets, insulated trousers, a winter jacket (preferably windproof), a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Precipitation at this time is minimal, but due to low temperatures, light snow or frost is possible, so waterproof shoes with non-slip soles will be useful.

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons with comfortable but changeable weather. It can be warm during the day, while evenings and nights are cool. The ideal solution would be layered clothing: T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, light jumpers, cardigans, as well as a demi-season jacket or trench coat. Do not forget comfortable shoes for long walks, as there is little rainfall during these periods. In summer (June-August), Jinan is hot, with average temperatures reaching 27-28°C, and maximums potentially exceeding 30°C. This period sees the highest amount of precipitation, although it is not abundant, but the number of days with precipitation increases. Therefore, light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, a head covering, sunglasses, and sunscreen are mandatory. It is also worth taking a light umbrella or raincoat in case of short-term rains.

Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are your main companion in Jinan. The city offers much of interest to explore, and foot comfort will be the key to pleasant impressions. Given the generally low amount of precipitation in millimetres, but the variable frequency of "wet days" (especially in summer), a compact umbrella may come in handy. The principle of layering in clothing is relevant practically all year round, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, especially in spring and autumn.
