Imagine a blooming 5-hectare oasis gently sloping down the hillside, connecting a modern station with the historic heart of the city. This "green bridge" in France was designed by the renowned Bühler brothers and today holds the prestigious status of a "jardin remarquable" (remarkable garden). It houses a unique collection of rare plants, while winding paths lead past artificial lakes and rockeries to picturesque panoramic viewpoints.

The park lives up to its name with an abundance of monuments and busts of great writers, but its main pride is the monumental work of sculptor Antonin Injalbert. The garden serves not only as a place for strolls but also as a living open-air museum where history and nature merge into one.

What to Do

In this picturesque garden, everyone will find something to enjoy. You can wander for hours through the intricate alleys, admiring the exotic flora, or settle on a bench by the lake to feed the graceful swans and ducks. For lovers of panoramic views, wonderful perspectives of the Orb River plain open up here.

Special attention should be paid to the sculptural groups. Do not miss the grand Titan Fountain and the impressive 17-meter statue of Atlas, who seems to truly hold the whole world on his shoulders. The park's cultural program often includes concerts in the open-air theater, turning a simple walk into a true celebration of art.

For families with children, Plateau des Poètes is an excellent place for outdoor relaxation, while those seeking silence will appreciate the opportunity to read a book in the shade of centuries-old plane trees. It is an ideal location for a romantic date or quiet meditation among the busts of Occitan poets, which create an atmosphere of peace and creative inspiration.

Getting There

The location of this attraction is incredibly convenient for travelers: it is situated in the very heart of the city, directly opposite the Béziers Railway Station (Gare SNCF). The main entrances to the park are located on the station side through grand wrought-iron gates, and from the upper side, from the famous Allées Paul Riquet.

If you are already in the city center, the walk to the park will take no more than 5–10 minutes. For those who prefer public transport, almost any city bus route going to the station will work. You can also use a taxi or a rented bicycle, as the city's infrastructure favors eco-friendly movement.

For tourists arriving by plane, the journey from Béziers Airport (about 20 km away) takes around 20–30 minutes by taxi or a special shuttle that will drop you right at the station, from where you only need to cross the road to find yourself in the shade of ancient trees.

History & Facts

The concept for this green space first emerged at the end of the 18th century, but the implementation of the large-scale project was long delayed due to a lack of funding. It was only in the mid-19th century, with the arrival of the railway, that an urgent need arose to connect the station with the city center via an elegant pedestrian route, providing the momentum to begin work.

The project was entrusted to the famous landscape architects — the Bühler brothers, who by then were already renowned for creating the Parc de la Tête d'Or in Lyon. The official opening of the garden took place in June 1867 and was a grand event for the city: about 15,000 people gathered for the celebration, and a hot air balloon was even launched into the sky.

The park received its poetic name thanks to the busts of prominent poets who wrote in the Occitan language that are installed here. Since 1995, the Plateau des Poètes has been officially recognized as a Historical Monument of France, highlighting not only its natural beauty but also its profound cultural significance for the Occitanie region.

Time Needed

To enjoy the park's atmosphere at a leisurely pace, see all the sculptures, and relax by the water, 1–2 hours is usually enough. This time is quite sufficient for a walk along the winding paths from the station to the central alleys, with stops for photos by the fountains.

If you plan to have a small picnic in the shade of exotic trees or are visiting the park with children who will certainly want to watch the swans for longer, it is worth setting aside about 3 hours for the visit. In the summer, it is also worth staying longer to catch one of the cultural events at the open-air theater.

Working Hours

The park is open to visitors daily and year-round, making it accessible on any day of your trip. The schedule is consistent: from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Sunday.

Although the gates close fairly early in the evening, the morning hours provide a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the garden's peace and freshness before the city bustle begins. During the summer period, opening hours may be slightly extended, so it is worth checking the city hall website before a late visit.
