Marktkirche Hannover

About

Towering over Market Square, the Marktkirche (Market Church of Saints George and James) serves as the primary spiritual symbol gracing Hannover. This majestic temple, erected in the 14th century, is a classic example of North German Brick Gothic. As the oldest surviving building in the city, the church lends a unique historical charm to the city center.

One of the most striking features of this sanctuary in Germany is its unusual silhouette: a massive 97-meter-high tower topped with a short spire, giving the building a characteristic and easily recognizable look. Paired with the adjacent Old Town Hall, the church forms one of Northern Europe’s most harmonious architectural ensembles.

The temple's exterior impresses with its austere beauty and lack of excessive decoration, typical of Brick Gothic. However, it is worth approaching closer to see the unique bronze portal by Gerhard Marcks, featuring deep symbolic reliefs, and the sculptures of patron saints who greet every visitor at the entrance.

What to Do

Stepping beneath the vaults of the Marktkirche, you will immediately feel the solemn tranquility of a Lutheran church. First, take note of the stained glass windows behind the altar—some fragments date back to 1340. The ascetic walls of unplastered red brick create exceptional acoustics; if you are lucky enough to catch an organ concert or a service, it will be one of the most powerful impressions of your trip.

Be sure to explore the interior details: unique tombstones and epitaphs from the 16th and 17th centuries have been preserved here. Among them, the monument to General von Obentraut stands out. Outside the temple, take a close look at the western portal—its reliefs dedicated to the theme of "discord and harmony" provoke thought on eternal values. Don’t forget to find the sculpted figures of Saints George and James set into the facade niches.

In clear weather, if access to the tower is permitted, don't miss the chance to look over Hannover from above. The observation deck offers a magnificent view of Market Square and the labyrinthine streets of the Old Town. After touring the church, it is pleasant to simply sit in the square, watching the city bustle and enjoying the contrast between the church's monumental masonry and the sky.

Getting There

The city's main Lutheran church is located in the heart of the historic center at Hanns-Lilje-Platz 2. Thanks to its central location, reaching it is easy: from the Main Station (Hauptbahnhof), you can reach the square in just a 10–15 minute leisurely walk through bustling pedestrian streets.

If you prefer public transport, use the U-Bahn. Lines U3, U7, U9, or U10 will take you to the Hannover Markthalle/Landtag station. From there, the church spires are literally a 2–3 minute walk away. City buses and trams also stop in the immediate vicinity of Market Square.

For those traveling by car or taxi, keep in mind that parking in central Hannover may be limited. It is most convenient to leave your car in one of the paid parking garages nearby and continue on foot, enjoying the atmosphere of the old town. Navigator coordinates: 52.3718562, 9.7353428.

History & Facts

The history of the Marktkirche began back in 1344, when townspeople started raising funds for a majestic new temple. The foundation of its massive tower was laid in 1347—a challenging time when the plague epidemic was sweeping through Europe. The new brick building was literally constructed around its 12th-century Romanesque predecessor so as not to interrupt the community's religious life.

One of the church's most recognizable features is its "shortened" tower. In 1368, due to an economic crisis and the aftermath of the epidemic, construction funds ran dry. Instead of a tall spire, builders were forced to install a simplified structure at half the planned height. This forced architectural decision eventually became a trademark of Hannover, which was even imitated in other regions later on.

Within the temple lie distinguished figures of centuries past. It is home to the tomb of General Johann Michael von Obentraut, a hero of the Thirty Years' War, whom popular legend endowed with the traits of the legendary "German Michel." The reformer Antonius Corvinus, whose contribution to the city's spiritual life cannot be overstated, is also buried here.

In 1943, the church was heavily damaged, yet its powerful walls and columns remained standing. The reconstruction, completed in 1952 under the direction of Dieter Oesterlen, restored the temple to its austere grandeur, intentionally leaving the interior brickwork exposed as a symbol of resilience and loyalty to tradition.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the Marktkirche, feel its ascetic atmosphere, and study the interior details, most travelers need about 1–1.5 hours. This is enough time to examine the ancient epitaphs, admire the 14th-century stained glass, and appreciate the skill of the modern sculptors who worked on the portal.

If access to the bell tower is open on the day of your visit, be sure to add another 30 minutes for the climb and the city panorama. It is also worth setting aside some time for a walk around Market Square itself to take beautiful photos against the backdrop of the red brick and the neighboring Old Town Hall.

Working Hours

The church hospitably opens its doors to parishioners and tourists daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. This schedule is consistent throughout the week, including Sundays, making it very convenient to visit at any time during your stay in the city.

Please note that during church services, weddings, or musical concerts, access for sightseeing may be temporarily restricted or closed. To ensure your visit goes perfectly, we recommend checking the temple's website before visiting if you plan a detailed interior tour.
