Towering over Market Square, the Marktkirche (Market Church of Saints George and James) serves as the primary spiritual symbol gracing Hannover. This majestic temple, erected in the 14th century, is a classic example of North German Brick Gothic. As the oldest surviving building in the city, the church lends a unique historical charm to the city center.

One of the most striking features of this sanctuary in Germany is its unusual silhouette: a massive 97-meter-high tower topped with a short spire, giving the building a characteristic and easily recognizable look. Paired with the adjacent Old Town Hall, the church forms one of Northern Europe’s most harmonious architectural ensembles.
The temple's exterior impresses with its austere beauty and lack of excessive decoration, typical of Brick Gothic. However, it is worth approaching closer to see the unique bronze portal by Gerhard Marcks, featuring deep symbolic reliefs, and the sculptures of patron saints who greet every visitor at the entrance.
