New Town Hall

About

Imagine a majestic castle rising above the glassy surface of a lake — this is exactly what the New Town Hall looks like, one of the most recognizable landmarks Hannover has to offer. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, it still serves as the mayor's office while remaining open and welcoming to tourists from all over the world.

This monumental building in the eclectic style is impressive in its scale, reaching a height of nearly 100 meters. Germany is famous for its architecture, but Hannover’s Town Hall is unique for standing on thousands of oak piles driven into the soft ground. It is surrounded by the picturesque Maschpark, which provides a perfect backdrop for photos in any season.

\n

Inside, visitors are greeted by an equally grand interior: a spacious lobby with a grand staircase and the famous arch elevator, the only one of its kind. The New Town Hall is more than just an administrative center; it is a true open-air museum that tells the city's story through its architecture and unique exhibits.

What to Do

Begin your tour by visiting the central dome hall. Here, surrounded by magnificent architecture, you will find four detailed models of the city. They vividly illustrate the settlement's development: from its medieval layout in 1689 to the modern metropolis and the significant destruction of 1945. Looking at them is like taking a journey through time.

\n

The highlight of any visit is the ride in the unique slanting elevator. Unlike standard lifts, it moves along a parabolic trajectory, following the curve of the dome. From the upper observation deck at a height of nearly 98 meters, a breathtaking panorama unfolds: you can see the entire city, the endless greenery of the parks, and the Deister mountains on the horizon.

\n

After heading back down, be sure to take a walk around the building. The Town Hall’s facade reflecting in the small lake within Maschpark is considered one of the best spots for photography. It is an ideal place for a quiet break, a picnic on the grass, or simply watching the evening city lights transform the building’s historic silhouette.

Getting There

The landmark is located at Platz der Menschenrechte 1, on the southern edge of the city center. You can reach it from the heart of the city with a pleasant 15–20 minute walk from the main station (Hauptbahnhof) or by strolling through the picturesque Old Town.

\n

If you prefer public transport, take a tram or bus (lines 4, 5, 6, 11, and others) that stops at the Maschsee/Maschpark or Rathaus stations. The journey from the central hub takes no more than 10–15 minutes.

\n

For those traveling by car or taxi, use Maschpark as your landmark. Parking spaces are available around Lake Maschsee, though they tend to fill up quickly on weekends and holidays. One of the most convenient ways to get around the city is via the bicycle paths that lead directly to the Town Hall.

History & Facts

The construction of this grand structure began in 1901, based on a design by architect Hermann Eggert. Building it was a challenge: due to the marshy ground near the Leine River, workers had to drive 6,026 oak piles to secure the foundation. The process took 12 years, with another master, Gustav Halmhuber, adding the final Art Nouveau touches to the interior.

\n

The grand opening took place in 1913 in the presence of Emperor Wilhelm II. A famous local legend is tied to this event: when Mayor Heinrich Tramm presented the building, he proudly told the monarch that the construction cost of 10 million marks had been paid in full with cash from the city treasury, without any loans.

\n

The Town Hall has also played a significant role in more recent history. It was within these walls in 1946 that the federal state of Lower Saxony was officially proclaimed. Today, the main hall features unique models that vividly demonstrate how the city has changed over time: from a fortified medieval settlement to the modern metropolis restored after the destruction of World War II.

Time Needed

You should set aside 1 to 2 hours for a thorough visit to the New Town Hall. This is plenty of time to admire the magnificent entrance hall, study the historical city models, and take the elevator up to the observation deck.

\n

If you plan to add a leisurely stroll through the adjacent Maschpark or relax by the shores of Lake Maschsee, we recommend allowing about 3 hours. Please keep in mind that during peak tourist seasons, there may be a short wait for the elevator leading to the dome.

Working Hours

The building's doors are open to visitors throughout the week, making it easy to fit into any travel itinerary. On weekdays, the Town Hall opens earlier to accommodate the schedule of city services:

\n

Monday — Friday: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
\nSaturday and Sunday: 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

\n

Please note that entry to the building itself is free, but the elevator ride to the observation deck is a paid service and may depend on weather conditions and the season (the elevator typically operates from March to November).
