Imaginata - a Experimentarium

About

Imagine a place where science meets imagination and the complex laws of physics become tangible and clear. Imaginata Experimentarium is a unique science center in the city of Jena, Germany, which its creators call an "experimentarium for the senses."

Housed in the industrial building of the former Umspannwerk Jena-Nord electrical substation, the center covers an area of about 1,500 m². It features more than 100 exhibits dedicated to optical illusions, physics, and mathematics. This is not a classic "hands off" museum, but rather a space for active exploration.

Imaginata's main goal is to spark curiosity and stimulate creative thinking. Through independent experiments, visitors can grasp the mysteries of perception psychology and see how the hidden mechanisms of the world around us function.

What to Do

At this center, you are invited to become a real explorer in the Stationenpark. Here, you can and should interact with every exhibit: test visual illusions on yourself, challenge the laws of gravity, and solve mathematical puzzles that come to life right in your hands.

Special attention should be paid to the workshops dedicated to energy and the climate. Imaginata actively promotes ideas of sustainable development — in the outdoor area, you can see working renewable energy installations, visit community gardens, or take part in "repair café" projects.

For those seeking a deeper experience, the center offers "understanding-intensive learning" programs. This is a unique combination of practical experiments and metacognition, which helps visitors not just memorize facts, but form a new understanding of how our reality is built.

Getting There

The science center is located at Löbstedter Str. 67 in the northern part of the city. The most convenient way to reach it from central Jena is by public transport: you can take trams or buses heading to stops in the Jena-Nord area.

For those who prefer active travel, a bike ride or a walk from the city center takes approximately 20–30 minutes. You can also always use a taxi for a quick and comfortable ride directly to the exhibition entrance.

History & Facts

The history of this unusual place began in 1991 at the University of Tübingen. Originally, it was an educational project focused on imaginative learning, which aimed to transform dry theory into a living experience.

In 1995, the project found a permanent home in Jena. In the summer of that year, the first Sommer-Imaginata took place — a large-scale event that brought scientific experiments, theater, and music together right on the city streets.

In December 1995, the non-profit association Imaginata e.V. was officially founded, which today manages the center with the support of the Heidehof Stiftung charitable foundation. The building of the former electrical substation proved to be the ideal space for realizing the most ambitious scientific and creative ideas.

Time Needed

Visitors typically spend about 2–3 hours at Imaginata. This is plenty of time to explore the main exhibits at a leisurely pace, experiment with optical illusions, and understand physical processes through practice.

If you are visiting with a large group or plan to participate in interactive workshops and sustainability projects, the visit may take up to half a day. In any case, this is not a place to rush — it is important to fully experience each experiment.

Working Hours

The center is open to visitors daily, making it accessible on any day of your trip. On weekdays (Monday–Friday), Imaginata is open from 10:00 to 15:00, which is perfect for morning tours.

On weekends, the hours are extended so that guests can enjoy the experiments at a more relaxed pace: on Saturday and Sunday, the doors are open from 10:00 to 18:00. This is an excellent time for family outings and a long immersion into the world of science.
