Weather Overview
The city of Kos in Greece has a typical Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. This makes it an attractive destination for lovers of sun and warm weather, especially during the summer months.
The summer season, lasting from June to August, is distinguished by very high temperatures, reaching an average of 23-26°C, and almost a complete absence of precipitation. July and August are the driest months. Winter, from December to February, is significantly milder, with average temperatures around 13-15°C. The majority of rainfall occurs during this period, with January and December being the wettest months with the highest number of rainy days.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are transitional seasons. In spring, the temperature gradually rises and precipitation decreases, creating comfortable conditions for visiting. In autumn, conversely, the temperature begins to drop, and the likelihood of rain increases, especially closer to November. Overall, the climate of Kos is notable for a significant number of sunny days per year, particularly during the summer period.
Temperature
The climate on the island of Kos is characterized by a distinct Mediterranean influence, ensuring warm, dry summer months and a mild, wetter winter. The annual temperature range is quite comfortable for visiting at almost any time. The hottest months are traditionally July and August, when the average air temperature holds at 25.8-26.0°C, and maximum daytime values reach 27.2-27.3°C. The coolest months are considered to be January and February, with an average temperature of about 13.0-13.3°C; during this time, minimum night-time temperatures may drop to 11.6-11.9°C, which remains a fairly mild figure.
The summer period in Kos, from June to September, is distinguished by pleasant warmth, which is ideal for beach holidays and outdoor activities. In June, the average temperature is 23.3°C, gradually rising towards August, when it reaches 26.0°C. Daytime maximums during this time fluctuate from 24.6°C in June to 27.3°C in August. An important characteristic of summer is the virtually complete absence of precipitation, especially in July and August (0 mm), which guarantees plenty of sunny days.
Winter in Kos, covering the period from December to March, passes without severe cold. Average temperatures during these months vary from 13.0°C in January to 15.0°C in December, with night-time temperatures dropping to minimum values of 11.6°C in January and 11.9°C in February. Although winter is the wetter season with the highest number of days with precipitation (up to 16 days in January), frost or snow is a great rarity here. It is worth noting that throughout the year in Kos, there is a relatively small difference between daytime maximum and night-time minimum temperatures, usually within the range of 2.5-2.9°C. This indicates the absence of sharp temperature fluctuations between day and night, creating additional comfort for staying on the island.
Precipitation
In the city of Kos, there is a distinct seasonality in the distribution of precipitation. The winter months, especially January and December, are the wettest, when 7 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 16 and 15 respectively. November is also characterized by a significant amount of precipitation (4 mm) and 12 rainy days. During this period, rains can be moderate but frequent.
With the arrival of spring, the amount of precipitation gradually decreases. In March, only 2 mm of precipitation falls over 9 rainy days, and in April — just 1 mm over 4 days with rain. May marks the beginning of the dry season, when precipitation practically ceases (0 mm) and only 2 rainy days are registered.
The summer months — June, July, and August — are absolutely dry. During this period, precipitation does not fall at all (0 mm), and the number of rainy days tends towards zero. September also remains very dry, with zero precipitation and just one rainy day. October brings a slight increase in precipitation to 1 mm and 3 rainy days, heralding the gradual return of wetter weather towards the end of autumn.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Kos, it is important to choose the right wardrobe to feel comfortable in any weather. In summer, from June to September, when the temperature holds around 23-26°C and there is practically no precipitation, your suitcase should be filled with light, breathable clothing. Cotton t-shirts, shorts, sundresses, swimwear, a hat for sun protection, and, of course, high SPF sunscreen are your main companions. Do not forget comfortable sandals or flip-flops for the beach and light open shoes for walking.
In spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November), the weather in Kos becomes more moderate, with average temperatures from 16°C to 21°C. During these periods, it is worth sticking to the principle of layering. Light sweaters, cardigans, jeans or trousers, as well as closed but not overly warm shoes, will be very useful. Although rains are rare at this time (with the exception of November, when the number of wet days increases), a light windbreaker or a compact raincoat may come in handy. In winter (December-March), the temperature drops to 13-15°C, and the number of rainy days increases significantly, especially in December and January. At this time, warmer items will be needed: sweaters, a jacket, perhaps a light scarf, as well as waterproof shoes and an umbrella.
Regardless of the season, for exploring the sights of Kos, you will need comfortable walking shoes, as the island is conducive to long walks. It is also worth thinking about a small bag or backpack for daily essentials, a camera, and a water bottle. If you plan to visit monasteries or churches, do not forget clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.
