General Weather Overview
The climate enjoyed by Kalymnos can be characterized as typical Mediterranean, making the island an attractive destination for travellers. Mild weather prevails here with a clear division into seasons: a sunny and dry summer gives way to a warm but rather humid winter. Thanks to the influence of the sea, there are no extreme temperature fluctuations here, creating comfortable conditions for relaxation.
The summer period, lasting from June to September, is distinguished by stability and abundant sunshine. At this time, precipitation is practically excluded, especially in July and August, when the number of rainy days is reduced to zero. The average air temperature holds around +23...+26°C, which is ideal for beach holidays and water sports, for which Greece is so famous.
With the onset of late autumn, the weather changes: November, December, and January bring the rainy season. In the winter months, the number of days with precipitation can reach 15, however, the air temperature remains quite pleasant, rarely dropping below +12°C even on the coldest nights. Spring on the island is a transitional period when the amount of rain gradually decreases, and the air warms up quickly, preparing nature for the new tourist season.
Temperature
Climatic conditions on the island of Kalymnos are conducive to relaxation all year round thanks to the absence of sharp weather changes. Statistics show that the peak of heat occurs in August, when thermometers record an average value of +25.8°C, while January remains the coolest month with a figure of about +13.4°C, which is still quite comfortable for the winter period.
The summer season is distinguished by stability and abundant sun, and maximum daytime temperatures in July and August reach the +27°C mark. A characteristic feature of the local weather is the insignificant daily temperature range: the difference between day and night figures is only about 2–3 degrees. This guarantees very warm and cozy evenings, allowing you to walk by the sea without the need for heavy clothing even after sunset.
Winter in this corner of Greece passes mildly, without frosts or severe cold. The off-season is considered one of the best times for a visit, combining freshness and pleasant warmth. For example, by May the average temperature confidently holds at the level of +19.6°C, and the pleasant autumn season in October delights guests with a comfortable +21.2°C.
Precipitation
For the island of Kalymnos, a classic Mediterranean climate with a clear division into dry and wet seasons is characteristic. Precipitation here is distributed extremely unevenly: summer delights travellers with stable sun, while the main moisture comes to the island in the autumn-winter period. Considering that even in the coldest months the temperature rarely drops below +12°C, precipitation falls mainly in the form of rain, and snow is a great rarity.
The driest period lasts from May to September. This is the ideal time for beach holidays and rock climbing: in July and August, the probability of precipitation is practically zero (0 rainy days), and the sky remains clear. June and September are also distinguished by magnificent weather, when rain may occur on average only once a month, without disrupting holiday plans.
The rainy season begins in November and continues until the start of spring. The rainiest months are considered December and January, when about 15 days with precipitation per month are recorded. In February and March, it rains less often (about 8–9 days), and by April the weather finally stabilizes, the number of wet days is reduced to a minimum, heralding the beginning of the dry season.
What to Pack
When planning a trip to Kalymnos at the height of the summer season (from June to September), opt for light clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton and linen. Since rain is practically excluded during these months, and the average temperature hovers around +25°C, you will need shorts, t-shirts, and open shoes. Be sure to take swimwear, a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF cream, as the sun on the island is very active.
For travel in the off-season (April, May, October), it is worth using the principle of layering. During the day it may be warm enough for t-shirts, but evenings are often cool due to the sea breeze, so a light windbreaker or jumper will be indispensable. Given the terrain, do not forget about comfortable shoes with flat soles or sneakers, which are ideal for long walks along picturesque trails.
In winter and late autumn (from November to February), the weather becomes more humid and cool: the temperature drops to +13...+15°C, and the number of rainy days reaches a maximum, especially in January and December. During this period, a suitcase must contain a waterproof jacket, an umbrella, and warm items such as sweaters and jeans to feel comfortable during changeable weather.
