The castle was built on the ruins of an ancient fortification, commissioned by the banker Gaetano Bonoris. The complex's architecture was inspired by the famous castles of Piedmont and the Aosta Valley, giving it a unique look: crenellated towers, massive window grilles, and deep moats recreate the appearance of a powerful defensive bastion. Today, it is not just a historical building but an important cultural symbol and museum, opening doors to a world of neo-feudal luxury.

Surrounded by a three-hectare English park, the castle offers guests not only an immersion into history but also aesthetic pleasure. The interior decoration is striking with its wealth of frescoes, exquisite furniture, and details crafted by the best masters of the time. This place is perfect for those seeking inspiration and wanting to see how ancient traditions intertwine with the elegance of the Art Nouveau era.

What to Do

A visit to Bonoris Castle is always a journey back in time, beginning with a mandatory guided tour. Inside, luxurious halls await you, most notably the library featuring the coats of arms of the House of Savoy and the council hall, which impresses with its detailed craftsmanship. Walking up the Gothic staircases decorated with checkerboard frescoes, you can peek into the King's chamber or examine the cozy chapel on the ground floor.

Particular attention should be paid to the fortress's exterior elements: climb the towers to walk the "sentinel's path", paved with pink Veronese stone. The castle walls offer breathtaking views of the city and the cathedral. Military history enthusiasts will appreciate the surviving medieval buttresses and stone cannonballs that serve as reminders of the ancient origins of the citadel's foundation.

After exploring the interiors, be sure to stroll through the shaded alleys of the English park. Here, a "secret" garden is hidden among centuries-old trees — the perfect spot for quiet reflection and panoramic photos. If your visit coincides with the warmer months, you might witness a grand wedding ceremony, as the castle is one of the most popular and prestigious venues for celebrations in the region.

Getting There

This picturesque castle is located at Piazza Santa Maria, 36, on the summit of San Pancrazio hill. If you are already in the city center, the walk to the fortress gates will take about 15–20 minutes. From the main square, Piazza Santa Maria, dominated by the majestic cathedral, a steep climb leads past ancient walls and a round tower, offering visitors a pleasant stroll with panoramic views unfolding gradually.

For travelers arriving by car, it is most convenient to come from Brescia via the A4 motorway (Montichiari exit), following the signs to the city center. Parking spaces are available at the foot of the hill, from where you can continue on foot. Regular bus services also run from Brescia to the town, after which you can take a taxi or walk to your destination.

For those arriving from further away, the nearest air hubs are Verona Airport (about 40 km) and Milan airports (Bergamo or Linate, approximately 100 km). From the airports, it is easiest to book a transfer or rent a car to comfortably reach one of the most beautiful spots in the province.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to the deep past: a fortification on San Pancrazio hill existed as early as the 10th century. For centuries, the fortress was the center of the feudal holdings of the Counts Longhi, providing military and economic protection for the region. Fragments of the original medieval walls and buttresses have survived to this day, forming the foundation for the current architectural masterpiece.

The modern appearance of Bonoris Castle is thanks to the ambitions of the banker Gaetano Bonoris. In 1890, having purchased the ruins of the ancient citadel, he decided to transform them into a private residence embodying the ideals of the age of chivalry. Having received the title of Count from King Umberto I, Bonoris sought to emphasize his connection to the aristocratic past by creating a castle that seems to have stepped out of the pages of medieval legends.

The reconstruction was completed by 1900 and became an outstanding example of the Neo-Gothic style in Lombardy. Interestingly, Count Bonoris lived here until his death in 1923, leaving behind an unusual will — he ordered his personal library to be burned. After his passing, the castle became the property of the municipality and eventually turned into a museum open to the general public.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the hidden corners of the castle and enjoy a stroll through its gardens, it is recommended to set aside 1.5 to 2 hours for your visit. The main part of the visit takes the form of an organized guided tour, which usually lasts about an hour.

Extra time should be allowed for a walk through the romantic English park and the "secret" garden, which offer excellent photo opportunities. If you plan to walk up to the castle from the city center, add another 20 minutes for the climb and to enjoy the panoramic views.

Working Hours

Please note that access to the castle grounds is limited to specific days of the week. Bonoris Castle is open to visitors exclusively on weekends:

  • Sunday: from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:45 to 19:00
