The history of this site began in the second half of the 18th century when Marquis Paolo Antonio Menafoglio purchased land on Biumo Superiore hill. However, financial difficulties forced the owner to sell the property in 1788, after which it changed hands several times.

In 1823, the villa passed to the Milanese patrician Pompeo Litta Visconti Arese. It was under his initiative that architect Luigi Canonica rebuilt the building in 1829, transforming it into the monumental ceremonial palace that still stands today. A new chapter for the villa began in 1935 when it was acquired by Count Ernesto Panza di Biumo.

The Count's son, Giuseppe Panza, a passionate collector, began filling the halls of the old mansion with works of daring contemporary art starting in the 1950s. In 1996, he donated the villa and his unique collection to the National Trust of Italy (FAI). Following an extensive restoration, Villa Panza officially opened its doors to the general public in 2001, blending the 18th-century spirit with avant-garde energy.
