Goryokaku Tower is one of the main attractions of Hakodate, located on the island of Hokkaido in Japan. This modern observation tower is a symbol of the city and attracts tourists with the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views. It is located next to the historic Goryokaku Fort, famous for its unique five-pointed star shape.
The current tower building was opened in 2006, replacing its predecessor built in 1964 for the fort's centenary. Its height reaches 107 meters, and its architectural design thoughtfully echoes the star-shaped silhouette of the old fortress, making it a unique structure. The tower's design has a pentagonal cross-section, harmoniously fitting into the surrounding historical landscape.
The main reason to visit the tower is, of course, the views from its observation decks at heights of 86 and 90 meters. From here, you can fully appreciate the scale and beauty of the Goryokaku star fort, which is particularly impressive in spring during the cherry blossom season or in winter when its outlines are illuminated. In addition to the fort, the height offers a magnificent panorama of the city, Mount Hakodate, and the Tsugaru Strait.
