The history of Yagiyama Zoological Park dates back to October 25, 1965, when it first opened its doors to the public. The picturesque Yagiyama Hill was ultimately chosen as the most suitable site, meeting all these criteria.

On its grand opening day, the collection of Yagiyama Zoological Park consisted of 350 animals of 90 different species. The formation of this impressive collection was aided by other zoos in the country, including the famous Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, which donated some of their residents. Interest in the new zoo was massive: on the first day alone, it was visited by approximately 70,000 people, clearly demonstrating its enormous popularity among the residents of Sendai and the entire region.

Given the diversity of animals and themed zones, as well as the opportunity to participate in various activities, it is recommended to allow at least 3–4 hours for a full tour.
